Picked up The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey a little while back on a whim, not knowing anything about the author or the book, and not knowing that it had been made into a movie too. Started reading it a couple of days ago and oh yes, it's absolutely captivating. Not the sort of genre I normally read, but the writing is so good, so fresh it's almost a genre all of its own anyway. I'll have to hunt the film down after I read it.

The judges of the 2026 Philip K. Dick Award and the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society, along with the Philip K. Dick Trust, are pleased to announce the seven nominated works published in 2025 that comprise the final ballot for the award:

• Sunward by William Alexander (Saga Press)
• Outlaw Planet by M. R. Carey (Orbit)
• Casual by Koji A. Dae (Tenebrous Press)
• The Immeasurable Heaven by Caspar Geon (Solaris)
• Uncertain Sons and Other Stories by Thomas Ha (Undertow Publications)
• Scales by Christopher Hinz (Angry Robot)
• City of All Seasons by Oliver K. Langmead and Aliya Whiteley (Titan Books)

First prize and any special citations will be announced on Friday, April 3, 2026 at Norwescon 48. Plans for the ceremony will be posted at Norwescon’s website.

The Philip K. Dick Award is presented annually with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States during the previous calendar year. The award is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the Philip K. Dick Trust and the award ceremony is sponsored by Norwescon. Last year’s winner was TIME’S AGENT by Brenda Peynado (Tordotcom) with a special citation to ALIEN CLAY by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Orbit). The judges for this year’s award are Jim Aikin (chair), Kim Antieau, J. D. Goff, Abbey Mei Otis, and Lisa Swanstrom.

Luin tämän viime yönä, kun ei tullut uni silmään. Tänään katsoin leffaversiosta, että miltä ne lopun sienikasvustot näyttävät. Olihan ne elokuvassakin hienot, mutta omissa mielikuvissa ne olivat sumuisen toismaailmallisia ja kauheita ja se muutti kirjan lopun vielä hienommaksi. Se on sellainen hauntingly beautiful -loppu (varsinkin kirjassa). En ole sellaista ennen tavannut zombietarinoissa. Just finished the #MRCarey #Pandominion series ("Infinity Gate" and "Echo of Worlds"). Great stuff! A great cast of very different kinds of selves, sentient creatures from different Earths and self-conscious AIs from different universes.

Heady stuff, but anchored by very real and relatable characters. With some thematic echoes from the #RampartTrilogy, (The #BookOfKoli et al.), which is one of my favourite series by any author.
