Lynn Conway was the first trans person I knew that I was meeting. She came and spoke to my women's studies class in 1999. That's where I learned that being trans was a thing. And the next day, I told my friends I'd be transitioning.

I got scared and went back into denial for 20 more years, but that's not Lynn Conway's fault.

Lynn Conway was remarkable in a number of ways but I think the reason her death hits me so hard even though I didn’t know her personally is the most unremarkable thing about her: One of us got to live her life quietly, grow old, and be remembered fondly as herself in death.

I think that’s all I really want.
