Tattoos are NOT benign decorative choices.
I am a former aesthetician. Skin care was my gig for 17 years. I've always known tattoos are a stress on the body particularly the lymph system.
These two MDs are cautious but, at least, start to open up the conversation about the safety of pushing ink into the body's largest organ. (Yep. The skin is an organ.)
Read the comments. Some very good first hand stories.

Former esthetician here. Which is to say, I’ve been paying attention to this issue for a long time.
Tattoos are not risk free.
"Tattoo ink does not remain confined to the skin. Studies show that pigment particles can migrate through the lymphatic system and accumulate in lymph nodes."

Don't give your pet mouse 🐁️ a tattoo. A study by Capucetti et al. in PNAS found the ink lingers in lymph nodes for months and kills immune cells. Effect on vaccines varied; Comirnaty (for COVID) injected into a tattoo was weaker while the flu jab was stronger.

I never could figure out why high school science often overlooks the lymphatic system. I created this resource for teachers, makes it much easier to explain to students. Has some helpful animated GIFs

Early regional #lymph node #activation drives #influenza #vaccine responses in an ancestrally diverse cohort
Source: BioRxIV, AbstractEarly in vivo dynamics of human immune-cell activation across regionally activated lymphoid tissue sites upon immunisation are poorly characterised in ancestrally diverse individuals. Here, we profiled draining and non-draining axillary lymph nodes (dLNs and ndLNs) by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) in 13 Black and Asian…

#Tattoos increase your risk for #cancer
> The study population consisted of 11,905 individuals, and the response rate was 54% among cases (n = 1398) and 47% among controls (n = 4193). The #tattoo prevalence was 21% among cases and 18% among controls. #Tattooed individuals had a higher adjusted risk of overall #lymphoma (IRR = 1.21; 95% CI 0.99–1.48).

"Under the effect of the lectin, endothelial cells undergo profound cellular changes resulting in endocytosis and degradation of the junctional protein VE-cadherin, formation of an actin rim, and arrested cell motility. This likely negatively impacts the capacity of endothelial cells to respond to extracellular stimuli and to generate the intercellular gaps for allowing leukocyte diapedesis."
