  5. after 5 weeks of emailing, ringing, and absolute tripe i finally have a refund for my meta ray-bans (issued, amusingly, part-wise, 5 separate partial refunds)

after my experiences i would strongly advise against buying glasses from their website. they did not fit and shipped the wrong colour. the fitting issue would have been apparent if there was anywhere near me to try them on, but there wasn't and i decided to chance it. learn from my mistake!

they do not do easy returns on optical goods - they claim it all over the website but when you pick a prescription lens all those claims vanish but no warning is given.

the people i dealt with were lovely but the system is clearly very screwed. it's clear that wearables have a LONG way to go in terms of supporting a range of head sizes.

  9. Hooray! My first encounter with the #luxottica #databreach …

This unique email address was given to a Sunglass Hut store in NYC… 10 years ago! It has never been used since - I unsubscribed back then and I’ve never communicated with the email. For some reason, Luxottica figured, “retaining this decade-old email address for an inactive customer, yeah that seems reasonable”.

Considering “data as an asset” is to me, reasonable for short periods. But data should be considered a liability as time goes on. I refuse to believe you can glean any useful information from a 10-year-inactive customer.

It, also seems that fines and punitive damages are obviously so low that companies don’t care. Paying out a class actuin or a fine is cheap enough for them to consider it a reasonable cost of doing business. Which is why these companies keep data collecting like it’s business as usual.

Hoarding records just incase your marketing department might need it, should cost businesses more than they net. We need harsher punishment for data breaches - especially for absurd data retention practices.

  12. Holy crap.

So, yes I'm old enough to need #progressive (read #bifocals) lenses in my #glasses. Spurred by this weekends *breaking* of my non-tinted pair, I finally went for an eye-exam for the first time in nearly 5 years.

The frame alone is $350 (thanks #Luxottica Group S.p.A monopoly asshats)** **and the lenses are $275 each.

And guess how much the benefits cover: $250 every 24 months. Do unspent amounts rollover? nope.

*Tragically, few #optometrists have layaway or installment plans.*

  16. Yay, another #dream. Not as interesting or detailed as the last one, but hey, it's something.

The topic of this episode Germany's Last Week Tonight is #Luxottica.

The Luxottica HQ is in Nuremberg and the CEO looks almost exactly like Satya Nadella.

In a promo video he first does, without glasses, cool moves in sports like basketball while directly looking at the camera seeming very unimpressed and unhappy.

In the video's other half he is, with progressively more extravagant glasses, seen doing fairly normal every day activities like driving a car, but portrayed like he's having a great time.
