Elon Musk’s Historically Accurate Odyssey Is Just a Culture-War Tantrum
Elon Musk has escalated his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey by promising that Grok Imagine will produce a full-length AI adaptation before the end of 2026. Musk claims his version will be “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer, although the ancient poem is a mythological epic filled with gods, monsters and supernatural events.
The declaration came after Musk responded positively to a proposal for a $100 million remake directed by Mel Gibson. His intervention has added a new layer to the backlash surrounding Nolan’s film, particularly the criticism aimed at Lupita Nyong’o’s casting. Nolan has dismissed much of the pre-release outrage as irrelevant, arguing that audiences should judge the finished work rather than online speculation.

Calling The Odyssey “historically accurate” is already doing far too much. This is a story featuring gods, witches, sea monsters and a one-eyed giant. You can research every bronze helmet down to the last rivet, but Poseidon is still not available for fact-checking.
Musk’s promise sounds like a tantrum with a rendering budget. The outrage was never really about Homer. Much of it targeted Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, a Black actress cast as Helen of Troy, and Elliot Page, a transgender actor playing the Greek soldier Sinon. Complaints about “historical accuracy” became a respectable disguise for racial and anti-trans hostility toward actors appearing in a mythological epic.
Then there is the deadline. Apparently Grok will make a full-length epic by the end of the year, which should arrive shortly after the fully autonomous cars, Mars colony and everything else that was definitely coming any minute now.
And bringing up Mel Gibson as the guardian of historical accuracy is comedy. Braveheart alone should have disqualified that sentence before it was finished. Both Braveheart and Apocalypto are entertaining films, but they are not historically accurate. A faithful adaptation of The Odyssey is possible. A “historically accurate” version is not. It is mythology, not CCTV footage from Ithaca.

The Odyssey (2026) – Review
It seems like Christopher Nolan has always been drawn to men playing gods. If it isn’t Batman and his rogue’s gallery trying to bend the fortunes of Gotham City to their will, it’s the magicians of The Prestige who are willing to bend physics themselves to best one another – and let’s not forget Oppenheimer trying to harness promethean fire with devestating results. Well, it seems that Nolan has finally decided to cut out the middle-man and deal with the Gods directly as he’s decided to tackle one of the greatest stories in human history: The Odyssey. But with an unimaginable amount of expectation to meet as he adapts one of the most important and epic stories ever told, can the man famous for bringing brains and tangibility to the blockbuster do justice to Homer’s Odyssey?
Well, if anyone can, Nolan can – and he has, in a way that shatters preconceptions that he might retreat back to more standard dramatic fare post Oppenheimer. Witness a filmmaker at the height of his abilities delivering his grandest experience yet.Something is rotten in the kingdom of Ithaca due to the king-shaped hole that been left by the twenty-year absence of Odysseus. After leaving to fight in the Trojan War under the orders of Agamemnon, the king had all but vanished on his way home, despite a multitude of stories that told of his victory thanks to the gambit of the Trojan horse. This is cold comfort to his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus, who have been inundated with suitors ever since, who each hope to move in on the kingdom by any means necessary. While Penelope has to invite them in due to Zeus’ law that requires you to accept guests in order to honor the Gods, noblemen, such as the sneaky Antinous, plot and scheme in order to goad the young ruler-in-waiting into making a rash mistake.
But while Telemachus chooses to make the hazardous journey to Sparta to get more information from King Menelaus about his father, and his mother tries to deflect Antinous’ advances, what actually did happen to Odyssey after the sacking of Troy? Well, quite a lot as it happens, as we piece together an epic journey that takes more traumatic left turns than a road trip with an incontinent passenger. Heading of from Troy, we discover that Odysseus and his men opted not to take the same journey as Agamemnon (who made it home relatively quickly) and decided to take a more scenic route for reasons known only to their king. However this means that the group soon come up against a series of dangerous occurrences such as a giant, sheep-herding Cyclops; raging storms delivered straight from Posiedon; the hulking, armoured Laestrygonians; vengeful witches and various other horrors; but while Odysseus’ men start getting whittled down, his determination to get them home only grows.
But Penelope can’t stall forever and while Telemachus is in growing danger from Antinous’ ambition, can Odysseus free himself from whatever brain-frying predicament he’s found himself in to save his kingdom and his family? There are many reasons to be in awe of The Odyssey – the acting, the scope, Nolan’s ever-audacious obsession with trying to realise as much of Homer’s tale as he can in-camera – but the main one for me was the way he seems to be channeling those old, Ray Harryhausen movies like Clash Of The Titans and Jason And The Argonauts through his super-serious filter much as he did with Batman throughout his Dark Knight Trilogy. While more modern takes on Homer’s work strangely opted to leave out some of the more fantastical elements of the stories (the de-Godding of 2004’s Troy, for example), Nolan fully embraces it. OK, so he hasn’t got some guy in a beard and a toga playing Zeus, but we do get a selection of mythical obstacles that range from a truly breath-taking Cyclops encounter, to a body-horror courting moment featuring Samantha Morton’s furious witch, Circe. But while he’s scratching that mythological itch, Nolan’s keeping some other balls in the air that’s powered by his love of scrambling up the chronology of a timeline.
Fittingly for a film based on one of the oldest stories in existence, a lot of The Odyssey is partly related as stories itself, thanks to multiple flashbacks that fill in the full story as various characters relate them. The truly stunning Trojan Horse sequence is a harrowing mission behind enemy lines told by Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus, and large patches of Odysseus’ prior adventures are told by a genuinely exhausted looking Matt Damon to Charlize Theron’s tricksy Calypso, that either play as examples of high adventure, or play as traumatic, literal voyages into Hell. But while Nolan seems to be juggling a multitude of genres to get the full scope of Homer’s vision across, he also gives the growing tensions back in Ithaca the feel of a political thriller as both Telemachus and Penelope have to figure out how to out-maneuver various suitors in order to keep their grasp on a kingdom that has no king. The result is nothing short of stupendous, and while my sole gripe is that the director is still responsible for drowning out important dialogue with a blaring score (Really, Chris? Still?), it’s a minor gripe when you’re watching the results of a master craftsman peojected on a screen roughly the size of a block of flats.
But while Nolan is utterly dedicated to doing this right, he’s backed by an absurdly stacked cast who all would seemingly defy the Gods for him if he’d ask. This truly could be Matt Damon’s The Revenant as you can see the genuine fatigue etched on his features as the toll of all his experiences gnaw at his soul. Similarly, Tom Holland is something of a revelation here as it’s the first non-web shooting role I’ve seen him in where he’s truly excelled, and while the growing cult of Zendaya may be irked that (much like Dune Part 1) she’s mostly just a glorified cameo, Anne Hathaway is a force of nature as Penelope as she tries to manipulate those who would covet her throne from behind the limited safety of a protective screen. Everyone is on their A-game; Robert Patterson adds another snivelling cad to his rogue’s gallery of duplicitous scum-bags, Bernthal give raspy advice, John Leguizamo convinces as a blind old man, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page… the list goes on and on.
From Agamemnon’s Batman style helmet, to shots of a genuine crew rowing a real Greek boat on the actual ocean, Nolan’s eye for style also still remains unparalleled, but for all his usual, nonlinear, time-jumping tricks and devotion to high drama, the most impressive thing here is that director’s ability to shift gears to stop each, potentially episodic encounter, from feeling repetitive despite almost all of them end involving Odysseus’ crew running back to their boat in a panic.Nonlinear, epic, long – while The Odyssey sure sounds like Christopher Nolan is in his comfort zone, the true result is arguably his most challenging film to date. Thankfully, it also is utterly worth the effort and may well and truly be the most accomplished work yet of a director who seemingly knows no bounds. However, if Nolan has now managed to conquer Homer and greco-Roman wrestled him onto the screen unlike any other, where the Hell does the director possibly go next? A question for the Gods, methinks.
