Having spend years getting rid of lupins from a previous property, I'm amazed that the seed is openly sold in NZ. It's an introduced plant and a declared pest in Canterbury because it spreads profusely and screws up braided rivers.

I learned in an online class I took through Koanga Gardens that plants bank nutrients in the soil surrounding their roots and later draw these up to put nutrients into their flowers and subsequent seed pods. I think this is one reason people say to cut your cover crops before they flower. But this reason is moot if you are planning on turning those flower-stalk nutrients back into the soil or laying them down to form mulch.

I have also read that the reason is to prevent them making seeds that might drop into your garden bed, but I really don't see that as much of a problem.

This is a mix of blue lupin and mustard but the lupins stole the show. You are supposed to chop them down before they flower but the blue lupin flowers are so pretty I can't help myself!

Cover crops are used between growing seasons for several reasons. They out-compete weeds. Some improve the soil. (In this case the lupins are legumes, which are nitrogen fixers, adding nitrogen to the soil. The mustard releases chemicals which can eliminate certain plant diseases from the soil.

I'm not really a gardener. My Mum was and she instilled in me an interest, if not the talent. Anyway a few years ago I planted some lupin seeds in pots on a windowsill and they grew so I eventually stuck them in a raised bed in the front garden.

Fast forward to now, and they are absolutely beautiful. I keep standing and looking at them, watching the bees buzzing from flower to flower.
