Prehistorisch China
Laat-Neolithisch aardewerk uit China (Musée Guimet, Parijs)Deze blog gaat over de antieke wereld, dus de periode tussen pak ’m beet 3000 v.Chr. en 650 na Chr. De chronologische afbakening is simpel: daarvóór hebben we vooral archeologische bewijsmateriaal, daarna hebben we voldoende geschreven bronnen om te komen tot werkelijke geschiedschrijving. In de westelijke periferie ligt de einddatum iets later, maar voor het economisch, stedelijk en cultureel zwaartepunt van de antieke wereld, het oostelijk bekken van de Middellandse Zee, vormt het jaar 650 een mooi eindpunt.
De geografische grens is minder scherp. Daarom besteed ik ook regelmatig aandacht aan de Sao– en de Nok-culturen in subsaharaal Afrika en aan de culturen van Centraal-Eurazië. De Zijderoute is een fijn thema. Zo af en toe komt dus China in beeld, zoals bij de Romeinse beschrijving van het Zijdeland en de Chinese beschrijving van de staat Dà Qín, maar ik heb nooit een echt blogje gewijd aan het Verre Oosten. Een poging dus, met een kritische paragraaf aan het einde.
De Prehistorie van China
Eerst maar dit: het antieke China (“Inner China”) was zes, zeven keer zo groot als het huidige Frankrijk en daarom is het eigenlijk wat raar om het te hebben over “het” antieke China. Feitelijk was het een verzameling antieke culturen, gesitueerd in de oostelijke helft van het huidige China. De regio bestaat uit de bassins van twee naar het oosten stromende rivieren, de Huang Ho ofwel Gele Rivier in het noorden en de Jangtse ofwel Blauwe Rivier in het zuiden. De Gele Rivier stroomt door een gebied dat bestaat uit vruchtbare lössbodems.
Laat-Neolithisch aardewerk (Mariemont, Morlanwelz)De eerste sporen van landbouw, ergens rond 12.000 v.Chr., lijken te zijn aangetroffen in de regio ten noorden van de Blauwe Rivier. Rijst en gierst werden verbouwd vanaf het negende millennium, varkens en honden werden gedomesticeerd en het eerste beschilderde aardewerk werd zo rond 5000 v.Chr. vervaardigd. In deze periode, het Neolithicum, groeiden de sociale tegenstellingen: de elite is herkenbaar aan de aanwezigheid van jade in de graven. En zijde! Het beroemde product werd vervaardigd vanaf pakweg 4000 v.Chr.
En zoals je zou verwachten: vanaf het moment waarop kapitaal circuleerde, zijn er ook sporen van geweld. Er moeten er vorsten zijn geweest die leiding gaven aan grote groepen arbeiders, waaronder de eerste metaalwerkers. De bronstechniek lijkt ergens rond 3000 v.Chr. te zijn overgenomen van de Centraal-Aziatische nomaden: dat is tegelijk met de opkomst van het brons in de Levant, en dus een mooi voorbeeld van de wijze waarop Centraal-Eurazië ook werkelijk het centrum was van Eurazië.
Bronstijd
Na de klimaatomslag rond 2200 v.Chr., het 4,2 ka BP event waarover ik vaker heb geschreven, begint een periode die weleens wordt aangeduid als die van de Xia-dynastie. De latere Chinese teksten – die ik niet heb gelezen – presenteren de vorsten als een soort halfgoden die de overstromingen van de rivieren leren beheersen en de akkerbouw beschermen. Westerse geleerden typeren de verhalen als mythisch, Chinese geleerden denken weleens aan een reële zondvloed, en associëren de Xia-dynastie met een bronstijdcultuur in de regio Henan, aan de Gele Rivier. Die lijkt een politieke organisatie te hebben gekend die niet onverenigbaar is met de legenden.
Orakelbot (Shang-dynastie; Musée Guimet, Hamburg)De volgende dynastie heet Shang of Yin, en nam de macht over rond 1750 of 1600 v.Chr. (ik lees het allebei). Ze duurde tot 1040 v.Chr. en de negenentwintig met naam bekende vorsten beheersten een groter gebied dan alleen Henan: de hele benedenloop van de Gele Rivier en ook stukken van de Blauwe Rivier. In deze periode brak het schrift echt door, wat de administratie natuurlijk vereenvoudigde. Ik begrijp dat er discussie bestaat over de rol van sjamanisme.
De Zhou-dynastie begon als vazal van de Shang-heersers, maakte zich onafhankelijk en nam rond 1040 de macht over. Om deze machtsovername te rechtvaardigen, riepen ze het “hemels mandaat” in: het idee dat als het slecht gaat, dat komt doordat de vorst niet voldoende deugdzaam is, zijn legitimatie verliest, waarna een andere leider met toestemming van de hemel de macht overneemt, en voorspoed brengt zolang hij deugdzaam is – tot ook de nieuwe dynastie corrumpeert. De geschiedenis is zo een cyclus; in Mesopotamië bestonden soortgelijke opvattingen.
De Zhou-vorsten hadden twee hoofdsteden, Chang’an en Luoyang, en breidden hun macht geleidelijk uit over grote delen van de Chinese wereld. Wie daar buiten woonde, gold als barbaar – een ander nieuw concept.
Hert (Zhou-dynastie; Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg)IJzertijd
Inmiddels begon men voorwerpen van ijzer te maken: een nieuwe uit Centraal-Azië afkomstige techniek. Wanneer je de IJzertijd laat beginnen, is een beetje een definitiekwestie. Ga je uit van de eerste ijzeren voorwerpen, dan kom je bij 1000 v.Chr.; gietijzer was gangbaar rond 600 en staal rond 400 v.Chr.
Het wezenlijk nieuwe van ijzer is dat het een democratisch metaal is: het is overal te vinden. Brons veronderstelt koper en tin, en dus langeafstandshandel, en omdat de investeringen aanzienlijk zijn, kan alleen het hof de handel financieren. De opkomst van ijzer betekent het einde van dit monopolie en het ontstaan van kleinere staten. Dat is in China niet anders dan in de Levant, waar rond het midden van de achtste eeuw de centrale Zhou-overheid concurrentie krijgt van ruim 150 kleinere staten. Feitelijk waren de feodale heren net zo machtig als de koning. Deze fase uit de Chinese geschiedenis staat bekend als de Periode van Lente en Herfst, vernoemd naar de Lente- en herfstannalen, een hofkroniek van een van die deelrijken. Het gaat om de jaren 722 tot en met 481.
Bronzen vat (Musée Guimet, Parijs)Het was een tijd van urbanisatie – alweer een parallel met de Levant en de Mediterrane wereld. Ook de grote Chinese filosofische stelsels wortelen in deze tijd: Lao Tse, Sun Tzu en Confucius leefden rond 500 v.Chr., Mo Zi (Micius) leefde iets later.

Lady Wu Siyue often wears patterns that _feels_ very modern, like the wave print on her vest here, but I would'nt bet my hat that it is. Usually when I do I stumble over documentation that proves the pattern to be the oldest and most authentic one in the production. Unfortunately the Tiffany problem doesn't go away when you exchange Western fantasy for wuxia

Ouch! That was a kick in the gut I didn't expect! Thirty plus years ago I was so poor I basically ate every other day to make ends meet. Not for a long period (a few months), but apparently it stuck, because - yes - the everyday grey way to handle it is to drink water to feel less hungry.

Note the medallions on his shirt. The historically correct way to weave such a pattern is to put them evenly spaced horisontally and vertically. His medallions are overlapping and in disarray, and so far he's been the _only_ character with this exeption.
Also: this production was _loaded_! That's not printed, that's an actual brocade!

The indoor moat with floating lotus lanterns, the mechanical table spitting secret messages (that blurry spot to the left), and the buddha made out of hanging chrystals. Not a fan of making surveillance look cool (this is the center for that), but the set designer _really_ deserves All The Prices.
Also, I wonder if I can build something like this into my house? A little moatling perhaps?

It may seem like "duh!", but for someone who grew up with Hollywood's inability to follow through on their own research C-drama is a relief! People read the books the right way, the artwork is based on Chinese art, and characters and texts are actually legible. It's rarely 100% historically correct, but people know their stuff and how to bend it for coolness.

People read the books the right way, the artwork is based on Chinese art, and characters and texts are actually legible. It's rarely 100% historically correct, but people know their stuff and how to bend it for coolness.

Gao Bingzhu just grabbed a random great axe on the deck? The fight is ott awesome, but this irks me. I've sailed on a school ship roughly that size, and the basic gear of a Western cutter can't be that far from a junk! We did _not_ use axes as part of our training. Why on earth keep zombie fighting gear here?

The nuances are lost in translation (the guards are actually _ordering_ him to stop running), but the effect is the same. It's not like Gao Bingzhu willingly will return to the interrogation chamber. Yet, regardless of if it's "freeze!" or "bie pao!" - police will always try this weird trick. They never learn, do they?
