After some thought, I decided I would like to have an account here on the Lunatics Project / Film Freedom Misskey server in my own name. It's just easier to post as "me".
The longer post limit here is more fitting for a lot of my professional content, and I know there are probably people who don't want to hear quite as much from me as you would get on my personal Mastodon account at @[email protected] .
I plan to stick to professional topics here: animation, film-making, production progress, free-culture, free/open-source software ( #FOSS ), and so on.
No partisan politics, but policy politics, like copyright, internet governance, and so on. I follow most widespread content warnings, but not "eye contact", unless it's really intense -- this is going to be a media-heavy account with a lot of character art and so on.
There shouldn't be any NSFW content here, unless you count undressed 3D character models in progress (I make narrative animation, not porn, so they're generally not particularly anatomically-correct, but I'm not putting censor bars over breasts. I will CW as appropriate). Keeping the language PG-13.

"How it started" / "How it's going".
Comparison of the material and render styles from the 2013 "Teaser Trailer" (left) and the 2019 episode shot (also in the Preview trailer, right). There have also been subtle improvements in the models, of course -- although in fact, Hiromi wasn't modeled at all in 2012.

I have now migrated all 116 of my YouTube and Vimeo videos to my new #PeerTube instance.
I think, from now on, I'm going to post to PeerTube first, and then maybe mirror to Vimeo and/or YouTube when appropriate.
I suppose I'll need to go back to uploading source files to Git, now.

In 2012, there was a cute video of a ground squirrel at Baikonur Cosmodrome that was making the rounds on social media. So we added a cameo. Ros called him "Lubo".
In the final version, he's just chilling and watching the Soyuz go by.
The gopher model was created by Cosmin Planchon from the Summer 2012 production sprint.

I'd probably list these test animations from 2014 as the point when I felt we'd found our footing on the #NPR3D style I wanted to achieve in "Lunatics!"
Still a lot of tweaking after that, of course, but this is when it started sparking, for me.
Just migrated it over from YouTube. I'm just about finished with those, and will be migrating our old Vimeo videos over as well.

I liked this effect a lot, though it's from an earlier iteration of the set (and rendering style).
I will have to recreate this with the new assets as well as the new rendering and compositing style.
It's always a little daunting to do that: what if it isn't as good as the earlier version? And yet I don't want to use the earlier version, as-is, because it's inconsistent!

An interview piece Rosalyn and I wrote and performed, to provide some background characterization for "metaconceptual artist" Allen Emerson.
This was essentially a draft. After we cast actors, we did a new version of this, which is much better (reminding us how important good actors are!).
It can be heard in a scene in Episode 4, which is also Episode 2 of the Audiodrama, both called "Earth".

A detail render of the Mission Control Room set that I created for social media banners, showing what are ostensibly crew medical-readouts (I drew those with Inkscape, the scene is rendered with Blender).
This is similar to a shot that will occur in the pilot, except for the mission controller characters not being present.

To get the Freestyle lines to appear correctly for billboard trees, I create proxies that block background lines, but are not rendered themselves.
In this test render, they've been set to render so I can see that they match up correctly.

Lunar Transportation System logistics chart (reference mission profile). Part of the concept art, world-building, and also art to appear in some of the sets. Also the LTS partnership logo, of course.
Loosely based on some industry design studies, with a few original ideas. Fuel and tankage estimates based on Shuttle equipment (mostly).

The "Lunar Transportation System" is basically "containerized" -- it's set up to transfer modules like this one from point to point, sometimes with passengers.
This was a test render of the materials and decals. We'll first see this in use in Episode 2.

We probably did not need to go to this much trouble, but Chris Kuhn likes trains a lot, and there is a steam train like this outside the Baikonur train station, so we went for it.
As usual, Chris did the 3D model and I did the textures and decals, based on tourist photos, mostly.

We took some creative liberties with the Soyuz-TMA design and called the result "Soyuz-SF". The main difference is the docking adapter, which is meant to be the standardized APAS-89, rather than the legacy Soyuz type.
Other minor changes are mostly due to Chris Kuhn, during modeling.

And here's the LTS lander/command module, without the cargo module, also from ep. 2 & 3.
It's designed to keep the payload fairly low, and there's a lift arm to carry it down and set it on the surface -- or onto a service vehicle.
This vehicle is the LTS-2 "Alan Bean", named after the Apollo 12 Lunar Module Pilot (and painter).

I got the very short and to the point URL https://lunatics.tv for "Lunatics!" and I'm not letting it go!
I'll always have some kind of links from there to other project sites, fund-raising, episode releases, etc. Because it's easy to remember.
Tuvalu probably needs the money, anyway. They're a small, and as far as I can tell, inoffensive Pacific Island country who just happen to have the country code "tv". 😅

"Lunar Transportation System" service module (LTS/SM). From "Lunatics!", ep. 2 "From the Earth" and ep. 3 "To the Moon".
The idea was "a big expensive machine built by aerospace contractors that does what the Space Shuttle (STS) did for low-earth orbit, but for getting to the Moon".

Here is a still from the shot this set is used for.
Usually, they have nice, staid poses of the cosmonauts holding shovels and/or the tree, which Hiromi and Sergei are doing.
Georgiana, meanwhile, is going-to-town digging that hole! 😅

Exterior set of the "Cosmonaut Trees" - a park area near the "Cosmonaut Hotel" in Baikonur, where they have a tradition of planting a tree for each person who flies on Soyuz. A good demo of the NPR tree and grass style I came up with for the pilot.
There is a double-layer "backdrop" with flat/billboard background trees. The double-layer gives the trees some parallax in the shot to create depth.

A series of check renders from the sequence of the Soyuz launch vehicle being setup prior to launch.
The last shot changed a lot when I looked at the 3D models and realized how I could make the relationship with the Sun and Moon work out.
The Moon will be about half-phase in early April 2040, and it'll be near the Western horizon in the afternoon. So the timelapse from sunrise to afternoon matched up nicely. One of my favorite shots in the pilot!

A lot of my personal contribution to @LunaticsTV
is in the graphic design for logos, patches, and decals, that make up a lot of the detailing. These were all executed with #Inkscape although I have sometimes done post-processing in #GIMP (to get "blur" or "glow" effects, for example), as I did with the graphics for video monitors.
