The couple, from Deming, are accused of egregious child abuse and face the prospect of prison; and the lives of two children in the situation are altered in ways we can't yet know. In this case, it was in a remote area where, had no one said anything, I might be reporting something even worse.

Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School sent out a 10-question survey to their students as part of the charter school's reauthorization process. 68 percent of the students answered questions about conditions in their home environments, and their responses report various kinds of abuse, neglect and vulnerabilities.

Luna County is taking its own sheriff, Mike Eby, to court, accusing him of multiple violations of state law, county ordinances and the collective bargaining agreement with his deputies.
The accusations extend to interference with internal investigations.
Eby called it "frivolous and malicious."

In #Deming and #LunaCounty, these two local governments have been struggling to find ways to allow public input without the meetings becoming a circus.
Public comments can sometimes bring a lot of entertainment and some spectacle to a dry municipal meeting, but they decided there needed to be limits.
Deming got rid of public comments altogether -- but began holding monthly "town hall" meetings to let folks ask questions and comment at length. 1/2

In #LunaCounty #NewMexico commissioners will consider reviving a dormant citizens' planning commission. This is something several citizens and a newly elected commission have been calling for.

A broadband project announced yesterday involves installing 49 miles of fiber optic in #LunaCounty #NewMexico, bringing service to #ColumbusNM and remote areas south of #DemingNM.
822 locations sounds like a modest number but it belies the geographic scope of the undertaking, mostly covered with federal #COVID19 money and some matching money by the provider.
And they say they'll have it done in a year, which is bold.
