A toddler’s life was cut short when a Luna County Sheriff’s deputy en route to a reported robbery in progress at drove his Durango into a car driven by Franzoy’s mother — at 99 mph.
Yesterday, the county approved a $7 million settlement.

Deming Cesar Chavez Charter High School sent out a 10-question survey to their students as part of the charter school's reauthorization process. 68 percent of the students answered questions about conditions in their home environments, and their responses report various kinds of abuse, neglect and vulnerabilities.

Luna County is taking its own sheriff, Mike Eby, to court, accusing him of multiple violations of state law, county ordinances and the collective bargaining agreement with his deputies.
The accusations extend to interference with internal investigations.

In #Deming and #LunaCounty, these two local governments have been struggling to find ways to allow public input without the meetings becoming a circus.
Public comments can sometimes bring a lot of entertainment and some spectacle to a dry municipal meeting, but they decided there needed to be limits.

A broadband project announced yesterday involves installing 49 miles of fiber optic in #LunaCounty #NewMexico, bringing service to #ColumbusNM and remote areas south of #DemingNM.
822 locations sounds like a modest number but it belies the geographic scope of the undertaking, mostly covered with federal #COVID19 money and some matching money by the provider.
And they say they'll have it done in a year, which is bold.

Surprised by how little I heard about the #poppies this year. I'm told they came as early as December, and can still be found around Rockhound and Spring Canyon state parks in #LunaCounty #NewMexico.
When the winter precipitation is at just the right volume and timing, we get gorgeous displays of poppies in our desert. Other years, hardly any. But during March and April the show rolls up and the waves of color recede.
Since 2019, the Deming Silver Linings resource center has been assisting unhoused people in the community.
They've been championing the conversion of an unused motel into transitional housing for years, and #NewMexico is kicking in money to help make that happen.
Meanwhile, their work, a block away from downtown, continues.
