Un des films les plus puissants et agissants que j'ai vu ces dernières années, "#Soundtrack to a coup d'état" est en lecture libre.
"Ce film met en lumière comment la monarchie belge, le gouvernement des États-Unis et les multinationales se sont entendus pour utiliser des musiciens de jazz légendaires comme couverture pour des opérations secrètes visant à assassiner le premier ministre du Congo, Patrice Lumumba." Mais aussi comment il y a 60 ans, les dirigeants occidentaux ont vu comment le reste du monde était proche de les déborder, et quelle masse de violence ils ont dû déployer pour mettre ce volume d'émancipation sous le couvercle.

J'apprends que le second prénom de #zohranMamdani est "Kwame".
Un hommage au leader #KwameNkruma, premier président du Ghana indépendant de 1960 à 1966.Pan-africaniste, marxiste, anticapitaliste, il rendit l'école obligatoire dès 1962 et améliora considérablement la condition des femmes dans son pays.
Il fut renversé par un coup d'état fomenté par la CIA pendant qu'il était en voyage à l'étranger.
Et pour cause, le Ghana était le 2nd producteur de cacao et possède de grandes réserves d'or que N'Kruma nationalisa pour les soustraire à l'économie de marché qui ne laissait aux ghanéen que la portion congrue de leur labeur.
Au moins, il ne fut pas assassiné comme #Lumumba, #Biko ou #Sankara.Je souhaite à Mamdani de réussir son pari à New-York et de fermer le clapet à tous ses détracteurs...si il n'est pas assassiné avant.

I feel like I should write something about #Grimonprez' formally masterful documentary, which it seems to me continues to push a version of #Lumumba's murder that was established by Ludo de Witte and popularised by Raoul Peck; namely, one that underplays Lumumbas own tactical and political errors, presents Kasavubu and Tshombe as mostly pawns and Mobutu as the evil presence in the shadows and in general underplays Africans' agency. In contrast, Hammarskjöld seems more a traitor to the cause than a tragic figure in which the structural problems of the UN itself played out.
I've taught about the history of the #DRC several times. Each time, we would watch Raoul Peck's "Lumumba" at the end and take apart its heroic narrative. This doesn't mean downplaying the imperialist violence at the center of the story; it does mean taking African politicians' decisions seriously.

Great African empires
In this episode of “Lumumba’s Africa,” Professor PLO #Lumumba explores the #historical significance of the #African continent, which was the cradle of some of the greatest #empires, including the #Egyptian, #Songhai, #Benin, and #Yoruba empires, among others across the Mother Continent. Debord n'était pas seul a écrire les textes éditoriaux de la revue, ni à choisir les images sans doute, et son rapport avec les femmes a été pas mal commenté, mais le décalage entre les deux reste saisissant.
