Lugworms are polychaete worms that are often used for fishing bait. The burrows are ‘U’ shaped under the sand. The worm draws in water to consume, creating a little hole and it poops out the indigestible waste creating a wiggly pile on the sand. It is said that you can identify lugworm species from the poo cast pattern. Black lugs (Arenicola defodiens) leave the neatly coiled poop and the blow lug (Arenicola marina) makes a big wiggly mess!
