Aus diesem Anlaß zeigen wir in unserer Reihe #Blogkino seinen Klassiker "Dracula". Wer den Plot nicht kennt: Hoch oben in den #Karpaten liegt das Schloss von Graf #Dracula, das den Dorfbewohnern Angst und Schrecken einjagt. Als der englische #Immobilienmakler Renfield nach #Transsilvanien reist, um dem zurückgezogen lebenden Grafen ein altes Grundstück in #London zu verkaufen, warnen ihn die Anwohner vor den #Vampiren in dem alten Gemäuer. Doch der #Makler lässt sich nicht beirren und begegnet bald dem berüchtigten Grafen. Hätte er doch lieber mal was Gescheites gelernt.....

No explanation is given to Karloff’s “collection”, or his leadership of a Devil cult, and Lugosi’s fear of cats was shoehorned in to simply keep the character from his goal so the story could continue.

Tonight's #movie is probably our favorite #Karloff / #Lugosi joint, The Black Cat. Both the leads are super, the set design is awesome, and it's creepy as fuck. Plus another romantic leading role for David Manners, which might be my favorite of his. Our only complaint is the public domain soundtrack. Inappropriate in spots, and it just gets old. Minor complaint, though.

Though #Karloff is top-billed, bringing authentic pathos as a regretful, disfigured bank robber, it's #Lugosi's movie, relishing the mania of a retired surgeon / obsessive #Poe collector converting his cellar into a torture museum (complete with active pendulum)...

CW: Eyes! Wide, staring Bela Lugosi eyes...
Black Cat was absolutely brilliant and, yes the performances hammy by today's standards, but also with subtleties I had not expected.
Next up: Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932).
