Me, @jdekg, and @MattyCakes had a darn fine time at the #Lughnasadh / #Lammas ritual. We got wheat!

Happy Lughnasadh to those who celebrate it. In 2023, I made this mixed-media artwork inspired by the Pagan tradition.

...is the crow, greeting the early Autumn morning.

(It feels kinda wrong to have acquired our bread via delivery app, but we are also eating delicious berries from our yard, which feels more in keeping with the spirit of #Lughnasadh / #Lammas)

Anyway, a joyous #Lughnasadh aka #Lammas aka Loafmas to all the pagans and witches and passionate bread enthusiasts of the northern hemisphere. (And a peaceful, contemplative, and happy Imbolc to anyone observing such things in the southern hemisphere.)

Happy Lughnasadh/Lammas/Carb Day!
Our symbiotic relationship with grains is what most historians recognize as the line where human populations stabilized and started to grow. It's how we developed society and proliferated language.
The only reason it was possible for humans to gather in large groups was through agriculture, and the staples of agriculture are grains. Grains gave us community, culture, and the ability to amass knowledge. Grains are what make us human. Which means that making bread is a defining ritual of humanity.
This is what we Pagans are celebrating on August 1st, humanity's cultivation of wheat, and corn, and rice. The harnessing of death, and life, and death again. The making of bread, which is a sacred alchemy through which we turn grasses into golden sustenance by means of decay and combustion.
"For life begets life, and the fruit of the Earth is the fuel of the Universe."

"Now in the Northern Hemisphere, we are at the height of summer.
#Lughnasadh (pronounced LOO-nuh-suh; also referred to as #Lammas ) occurs on the first of August in the Northern Hemisphere (celebrated February 1st in the Southern Hemisphere). In the pagan #WheeloftheYear , Lughnasadh is the first of the three major #harvestfestivals that are part of the eight sabbats of the year."read more...

We are the Mama bears bringing baskets of turnips and beans from our own gardens. We wander the countryside looking for u-pick berry farms, and wild patches too, filling the freezers and jam cupboards. We weave magic in our steamy kitchens, jars upon jars gathering in our backrooms and basements. The greenhouse is overgrown with weeds and also full of lettuce and cucumbers hiding from the afternoon heat. We make food, harvest food and preserve food for our families but also for the love of it, the smell of ripe peaches blanching off their blush skins, tomato sauces bubbling away the hours, the ping of sealing jars while tea brews and crickets click, porch chairs creak and birds whistle in the brush. This life, this land, this way. For the love of it.

My #FullMoonArt is just a little late this month due to home renovations.
This is a scrap yarn altar cloth that I knit for Lughnasadh, which I designed myself. It's the season where I traditionally honor Ingvi-Freyr. As a sun god, it makes sense to worship him hardest at the height of the summer season, which is the grain harvest. As one of the Vanir gods, he rules over "the rains, and the shining of the sun, and therewithal the fruit of the Earth." -

This offering from #MoonLitPress explores #Lughnasadh, the first of three #pagan fall harvest festivals. It stands between high summer and the burnished death of fall, and is a time to consider what we’ve put our energy into this year. Flying Lessons is a wish for the prosperity of fledgling #birds as they make their way into the wider world, while the attendant #poem celebrates the beauty of this season of change.

All 7 of my hives have made themselves enough honey to get through the coming winter. Today I harvested 4 boxes of honey after getting up at 5 AM to wander about the yard as the sun came up. It's dry and hot but so much life and beauty and hope remains here. What a glorious way to spend Lughnasadh.

This week, the #Tarot intertwines with the #FirstHarvest festival of #Lughnasadh by highlighting the ways we are called to make our living .. or at least express our creativity.
With some "cosmic intensity" headed our way, as astrologer Lorna Bevan cautions us, we are offered ways to stay grounded and peaceful, regardless of events.
Which, any casual glance at the headlines will tell us, is going to be important.

The days are inching toward Lughnasadh. The harvests are well underway as the mountains get smokier and the buzz of insects in the afternoon gets more insistent. Even as the days get hotter, I yearn for cool autumn mornings wet with dew and the fragrance of bracken browned in the sun.
