Another day off due to storms. Have never had this many days off from work because of the weather (except for hurricanes). Poor Mochi is battling an upset belly and fear of thunder. Crazy to think that between holidays, mom’s passing and unprecedented storms, I haven’t worked a full work week since the middle of February.

Last night was the first time in my 56 years I went to bed knowing that my mother was no longer breathing somewhere else on this planet. I didn’t sleep much last night—just a jumble of thoughts and emotions running through me. Fourteen years after Mom’s diagnosis, I thought I was ready for this day, but I was wrong. I could be prepared, but I was never going to be ready.
When this morning finally arrived, the best thing I thought I could do was get up to meet the new day. Every ending brings a beginning. I am glad Mom is now free from Alzheimer’s, and I realized that she is not gone—she is everywhere. In the air, in the waves, in the clouds, in the rays of the sun. In me. And in all of you who met her.
Mom’s 86 years on Earth weren’t easy. She grew up in a time of war, left her home country, and made a life she never imagined. She was a single mother with two kids. Mom worked her butt off to make sure her kids would have more than she did. She tried her best and got up each time she was knocked down. You taught us well, Mom. We love you. #mom #luckywelivehawaii #mochislifeishard

This week feels like it’s been at least three months. Watching a loved one (or anyone, really) slowly slip away is beyond words I have right now. After a midnight dash to mom’s bedside, I had to run home to take care of Mochi.
As I made my way back to mom’s bedside I caught the sunrise and was reminded of all the beautiful things I get to see because of mom. ❤️ #luckywelivehawaii #sunrise #sunrisephotography

14 years after my mother’s dementia diagnosis we are coming to the end of this journey. Made it to the cemetery to finalize
some necessary details. So many thoughts and feelings running through me but it’s not over so I keep putting one foot in front of the other. The weather has been so bad that Hawai’i has closed all Public schools and DOE offices. (Local wind gusts up to 70) Will be glad to hang out with Mochi tomorrow. Guess it’s our version of a snow day. In the meantime, Mochi is hogging the blankets.
