Leadhills may not be an imaginative name for a village high in the Lowther Hills and founded on lead mining, but it is an apt one. Wanlockhead in Dumfries & Galloway, high in the Lowther Hills to the west of the A74(M). It developed from about 1680 to mine lead and other metals and is the highest village in Scotland at 467m or 1,531ft.
