#MetalPollution from a rocket reentry detected for the first time
Such #pollutants could degrade the ozone layer as #SpaceDebris accumulates and falls to Earth
By Adam Mann, February 25, 2026
Excerpt: "For the first time, scientists have directly observed metal pollutants leaching from a piece of #OrbitalJunk: a #SpaceX rocket as it burned in the atmosphere. Such pollutants can damage the #OzoneLayer, meaning the findings will help monitor potential harms from space debris, researchers report February 19 in Communications Earth and Environment.
"While humans have been launching metal things to orbit for nearly 70 years, the pace has skyrocketed in the past decade. Private companies plan to escalate this in the near future — for instance, #SpaceX ’s #Starlink system, which provides internet to far-flung places, will eventually consist of more than 40,000 satellites in #LowEarthOrbit . Nearly 10,000 are currently orbiting Earth.
"Each piece of equipment has a planned lifetime of about five years, after which it burns up in the upper atmosphere, releasing metals such as #lithium, #aluminum and #copper, all of which may catalyze chemical reactions that destroy ozone and have other adverse effects. A 2023 study found that about 10 percent of #stratospheric particles contain pollutants from burnt-up #satellites and #RocketStages.
"That motivated a research team to see if they could directly trace such particles to a piece of reentering space debris. On February 19, 2025, the researchers observed a cloud of lithium about 100 kilometers above Germany blowing out of a Falcon 9 rocket’s upper stage disintegrating over Ireland and the United Kingdom.
" 'A few hours after the reentry of this rocket, we could see 10 times more lithium than we would have observed otherwise,' says Claudia Stolle, a meteorologist at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Germany."

Escalation in orbit
By AUDREY DECKER
09/18/2026"Pentagon officials admitted there are #US weapons orbiting Earth — a watershed moment for the space race with #China and #Russia.
"But after dropping that bombshell, American officials offered no further details about what kind of weapons are circling the globe, or how they might be used. And some experts worried the announcement could ratchet up a global space arms race.
"The disclosure came at the Air Force and #SpaceForce ’s mainstay conference this week, and it drew significant attention. Pentagon officials have long avoided publicly discussing weapons in space, or providing any details about its orbital arsenal, citing national security concerns."

Chinese #Satellite Breaks Apart in Rare Orbit That Could Hold Debris for Centuries
#Yaogan50 generated a large filed of debris in a highly retrograde orbit.
By Passant Rabie
Published September 8, 2026, 2:20 pm"A reconnaissance satellite suffered an unidentified anomaly and broke apart into pieces. Now, those fragments are trapped in a high altitude above Earth, where they risk a head-on collision with another object.
"China’s Yaogan-50 (02) satellite launched on March 15, 2026, on board a Long March 6A rocket. The satellite successfully reached its operational orbit—a highly retrograde orbit, meaning that it travels in the opposite direction of Earth’s rotation at an altitude of approximately 590 miles (952 kilometers).
"A few months into its mission, however, the satellite appears to have malfunctioned. On September 4, the U.S. Space Force cataloged 43 debris objects from the breakup of Yaogan-50 (02), according to Jonathan McDowell, a former astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who tracks space activity.
Pesky debris
"The satellite’s fragments are currently at an altitude range between 372 and 683 miles (600 and 1,100 km) above Earth’s surface. The pieces remained within the satellite’s distinctive 142-degree inclination orbit.
"At that altitude, the resulting debris will likely stay in orbit for a long time. Debris that’s left in orbit below 372 miles (600 km) normally falls back to Earth within a few years due to atmospheric drag. The higher the altitude, however, the longer the debris will remain in Earth orbit.
"For debris that’s orbiting at an altitude of 500 miles (800 km), orbital decay can take centuries, according to NASA. Above 620 miles (1,000 km), the debris can keep circling Earth for thousands of years.
"There, the fragmented junk risks collision with other spacecraft or orbital debris, which would result in the creation of another debris field.
Tough break
"The European Space Agency estimates that there have been more than 660 explosions, collisions, or anomalous events resulting in fragmentation. As it stands, there are currently more than 1.5 million space debris objects in Earth orbit.
"It’s not clear what may have caused the Yaogan-50 (02) satellite to break apart, but it may have been a propulsion or battery failure, or it may have itself collided with another object or space debris.
"The Yaogan-50 is a series of remote-sensing and reconnaissance satellites that China claims is designated for national land surveys, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and mitigation. There is speculation, however, that the satellites are used for intelligence and military surveillance, according to SpaceNews."

This happened on September 4 -- 8-9 days before the #USA32 satellite explosion.
A Chinese #satellite has left #SpaceDebris in Earth's orbit, adding to the growing clutter that could circle our planet for centuries.
by Marie Perez
Wed, September 16, 2026 at 9:22 AM EDT"Here's what to know
The debris field was left by #Yaogan 50-02 — a Chinese #reconnaissance satellite that had been flying in an unusual retrograde orbit about 590 miles above Earth, according to Futurism. The U.S. #SpaceForce is tracking 43 fragments from the breakup in orbits ranging from 372 to 683 miles.
"On X, Harvard astronomer and space-tracking expert #JonathanMcDowell speculated that a 'battery explosion or an impact by #SpaceDebris' may have caused the breakup.
"Fragments at those heights can stay in orbit for extraordinarily long periods, so a single satellite failure can create a pollution problem that endures for generations.
"That danger is growing in an already crowded orbital environment. The European Space Agency says more than 60 years of space activity have produced over 56,000 tracked objects in orbit. Roughly half of those in the U.S. Space Surveillance Network's catalog are expected to keep circling the planet indefinitely.
"More background
" #SpaceJunk may be easy to overlook because it is out of sight, but it can still have serious consequences for life on the ground. A more dangerous orbital environment raises the risk of collisions that could damage satellites used for #GPS, #InternetAccess, climate monitoring, transportation, and emergency management.
"One major long-term fear is #KesslerSyndrome , a scenario researchers have warned about for years in which one serious collision creates debris that triggers additional collisions in a cascading chain reaction. If that unfolds, some orbital regions could become much more hazardous for spacecraft.
"As Futurism reported, that risk is serious enough that an international team of researchers introduced a 2025 model called the Collision Realization and Significant Harm, or #CRASHClock. They concluded that after a widespread disruptive event, a catastrophic #Kessler cascade could accelerate quickly enough to threaten casualties on the ground within days."

Ooopsies!
UNEXPECTED SATELLITE EXPLOSION: A #ColdWar #SpySatellite just broke apart in Earth orbit, and no one knows why.
"The US Space Force detected the breakup on Sept. 13th when USA 32 unexpectedly shed a cloud of debris 775 km above Earth. The number of fragments is still unknown; Space-Track, the Space Force's public catalog, has not yet released a count.
" #USA32 was launched in 1988 on a top-secret mission to monitor Soviet radars from orbit. It was part of a series of satellites named after the actress Farrah Fawcett. This one was Farrah III, shaped, ironically, like a squat cylinder. The 'tuna can' form allowed it to rapidly spin and sweep its antennas across the ground below. The NRO fully declassified the program only this year.
"There may be nothing sinister about this event. Old spacecraft carry batteries and leftover propellant. After 38 years of heating and cooling, a pressurized tank or a battery cell on USA 32 may have simply ruptured. This is a leading suspicion, although it is too soon to rule out a meteor strike or ASAT.
"Other satellites may be in danger. USA 32 broke up in a crowded shell of #LowEarthOrbit. Within 50 km of its altitude are more than 200 active satellites, including the entire #IridiumNEXT constellation. Even before USA 32 broke up, this region was extremely cluttered. NASA identifies a major debris-density peak already there from the Iridium 33/Cosmos 2251 collision in 2009. The collision threat is real.
"Analysts are carefully tracking the fragments and measuring their individual trajectories. Soon, they may be able to "run the clock backward" to see how the explosion began.
"Stay tuned for updates!"
