This is a loveliness of ladybirds preparing themselves for winter.

The collective noun for a group of ladybirds is called a loveliness. What an apt name for these beetles.

These harlequin ladybirds will hunker down and become dormant over the winter, whilst there is a scarcity of food. Not all species of ladybirds group together, some like the Seven-spot prefer a solitary spot, within tree bark, gaps of rocks or leaves.
