We Live In The Shadowlands

Several years ago, I watched Shadowlands and was deeply touched. The movie tells the true story of the author C.S. Lewis (Jack), who though an award-winning author, leads a relatively passionless life until he meets an American divorcee, Joy Gresham. It is the beginning of a deep love, a love that changes both of them in a powerful way, and deepens their faith in God. But their time together is short as Joy becomes terminally ill with cancer.

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night afraid that something horrible has happened to someone that I love. So I pray for everyone I can think of. I reach my hand over and draw comfort from the warmth and breath of my wife who still sleeps beside me. Slowly my fear ebbs away because for another night the Angel of Death has passed over the doors of those who are closest to me. (Though I do not think it has very much to do with my prayers).

I want to pray as hard for everyone in the world as I pray for my family and friends. The Angel of Death does not always pass over. I do not want to live my life in fear. I do not want to be afraid of the pain that comes with being close to people and thereby miss the happiness that comes from their presence.

In the movie, Joy, in pushing Jack to be present to ALL of life, states: “We can’t have the happiness of yesterday without the pain of today. That’s the deal.”

We live in the Shadowlands, between the sunrise and sunset. But the sun is always present and as long as I cast a shadow, it means that I am alive. Alive to live and love and care and hurt to the fullest of my being.

That’s the deal.

I Didn’t Come Here to Escape America

Why I Came

I didn’t come to the Philippines to escape America.

That’s not quite true.
And it’s not quite false.

I came because someone loved me.

She wanted me here. She wanted me with her. She wanted to take care of me, and she wanted us to build memories together—the ordinary things people talk about when they finally find someone they trust. Meals. Laughter. Being goofy. Being silly. Being safe.

I arrived in the Philippines on September 5, 2023.
She died of cancer on September 3, 2025.

We didn’t have forever. But we had real time. And during that time, I was happier than I had ever been. She was sweet. She was funny. She was warm in a way that didn’t demand anything in return. She made life lighter just by being there.

That part of the story is simple.
It’s also the hardest part to say out loud.

Staying After the Reason Is Gone

When she died, the reason I came here disappeared—but the life didn’t. I didn’t arrive chasing a country or a lifestyle. I arrived because a person asked me to come. When she was gone, I found myself living inside a decision that had already been made.

I stayed.

Part of that was love.
Part of that was grief.
And part of that—if I’m honest—was America.

Because even then, years ago, something back home didn’t smell right.

What Didn’t Smell Right

I didn’t just see what was coming. I felt it. The way you feel weather change before the clouds roll in. The way you know something is off before you can explain it. Where I grew up, we didn’t intellectualize that feeling. We just said, something stinks.

Work was hollowing out. Institutions were shedding responsibility while demanding loyalty. Qualified people were being chewed up and told it was their fault. The country wasn’t collapsing—but it was rotting in places that mattered.

So when she said, come be with me, I trusted her.

It was the best decision I ever made.

What the Philippines Tells You Straight

After she died, I didn’t suddenly become an “expat.” I didn’t reinvent myself. I didn’t find closure, enlightenment, or a five-step process for healing. I just kept living where I was, in a place that didn’t pretend to be something else.

The Philippines doesn’t sugarcoat hierarchy. It doesn’t lie about obligation. It doesn’t sell the myth that effort always pays off. That clarity can be uncomfortable—but it’s honest. And after decades of American optimism layered over structural decay, honesty counts for something.

Learning Gratitude the Hard Way

One of the quieter lessons I had to learn here was about gratitude.

Back home, gratitude is verbal, immediate, and explicit. You say thank you. You say it right away. If you don’t, something’s wrong—distance, entitlement, disrespect.

Here, it doesn’t always work that way.

I gave Christmas gifts and waited for the response I’d been trained to expect. It didn’t come. No thank-you message. No acknowledgment in the form I recognized. For a moment, it felt familiar in the worst way—like giving and disappearing again.

But it wasn’t that.

In many Filipino families and relationships, especially where age or responsibility is involved, gratitude isn’t always spoken. Acceptance itself can be the acknowledgment. Saying thank you too explicitly can even create distance, as if the gift were a transaction instead of part of belonging.

I had to stop and ask instead of react. That pause mattered.

What felt like silence wasn’t dismissal. It was closeness expressed differently.

Keeping It Real

If you carry American expectations everywhere you go, you’ll misread people constantly and blame them for rules they were never taught. Learning when not to demand recognition is part of learning how to live somewhere honestly.

I’m not here for pity. I’m not here for inspiration points. I’m not here to tell anyone what choice to make.

I’m here because this is where my life landed after love did what love does: it rearranged everything, and then it ended.

Keeping it real doesn’t mean being miserable.
It means not lying about how your life actually unfolded.

There’s a lovely compactness to this, Sam, but also a productive ambiguity I want to press on, because I’m not sure the post says what you may think it says — and the ambiguity might be the most interesting thing in it.

Yeats’s speaker is full of tears precisely because he did not take love easy. She counselled him to let love come and go “as the leaves grow on the tree” — organically, without grasping — and he, young and foolish, would not agree. Now consider your own claim: you have never fallen out of love with anyone. On one reading that is beautiful constancy. But on another reading, never falling out of love is the very opposite of taking love easy — leaves that grow but never fall, grass that never yields to the season. By that light, your epigraph doesn’t contrast you with Yeats’s speaker; it makes you his kin, only without the tears. The question the post silently raises is: why no tears? Is it because your loves, held forever, never needed to end — or because something in you holds them in a register where endings don’t apply?

That’s where I suspect the Advaitic answer is hiding, and where the post could earn its title. “This Forever Love In Me” — the preposition is doing quiet work. If love is in you rather than between you and a particular person, then it was never really pinned to the nāma-rūpa of the beloved at all; the persons were occasions, the love was the constant. On that view, “never falling out of love” isn’t remarkable fidelity to many people but the simple fact that what you call falling in love was each time a recognition of something that doesn’t come and go. Requited or not becomes almost irrelevant — which your sentence already concedes in passing, and that concession is telling.

My honest editorial note: as it stands, the post is an epigraph plus a borrowed poem, and Yeats is carrying nearly all the weight. Your single sentence is genuinely intriguing — the “OUT” in capitals, the casual “many times,” the shrug at requital — but it gestures at a whole philosophy of love and then hands the microphone to Yeats before saying it. Even three or four more sentences of your own — on what it is that never leaves, and whether the salley-gardens girl’s advice is wisdom or resignation from where you stand — would turn this from a framed quotation into a real dialogue with the poem. You’ve written enough on love and lust across traditions that you have those sentences in you; this post just hasn’t spent them yet.

One small craft point: “a la Yeats” reads slightly loose against the precision of the rest — “as in Yeats’s poem” or simply dropping it would tighten the line, since the title citation already does that work.
