  27. "Long before they planted beets in Argus and built the highways, there was a railroad."

-- First Sentence of Louise Erdrich, *The Beet Queen* (1986)

    ---
Super excited to start this one, the second of her novels set in the *Love Medicine* world.

One chapter in and I'm already hooked. And it's still cold and snowy and a Saturday, and I'm wondering how much of the day I can just read away.

  30. What looks chaotic is often a system too complex to flatten into our expectations.

Indigenous ways of knowing have always honoured that scale and pattern are contextual.

  32. The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich
    Book 12-2025
    Fiction, 3/5

Themes: Ojibwe culture, family, colonialism, magical realism, indigenous, relatives

Louise Erdrich is such a sublime writer. Her use of language to weave a rich tapestry of place and people is unparalleled. However, this book about the bloodline of Blue Prairie Woman from civil war era to the late 90s fell flat for me.

  33. "The grass was white with frost on the shadowed sides of the reservation hills and ditches, but the morning air was almost warm, sweetened by a southern wind. Father Damien's best hours were late at night and just after rising, when all he'd had to break his fast was a cup of hot water. He was old, very old, but alert until he had to eat."

Opening lines of *The Last Report on the Miracles at Little Horse*, by Louise Erdrich.

Started this in the middle of the night a few nights ago, absolutely wonderful so far. Will share running thoughts here.

  34. Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and ...

  39. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis haunted by a ghost who wants something from Tookie who has worked there since her release after a 7 year prison sentence she survived by reading ferociously. Tookie who tries every Native American ghost remedy, who loves her newfound life & her stepdaughter's unexpected baby. Rich & funny & sad & highly recommended

Nice selection! I read and enjoyed a fair proportion of those. I love #LouiseErdrich and her book that I especially loved this year was #TheNightWatchman, loosely based on the true story of her grandpa's advocacy for their band.
