    Update from Los Padres NF:

    Current Situation:
The heavy marine layer moderated fire activity, and the fire is currently hung up above the houses on the east side of Highway 1. Crews continue to create containment line behind houses where possible and remain on scene at each structure. They are also continuing to work on a continuous line behind the houses. Some of this is complete, but steep drainages make this work very difficult, especially without the assistance of aircraft which has been severely limited by fog.
In addition, a dozer line is being constructed along Coast Ridge Road south from De Angulo Canyon southwest toward Highway 1 for use as a contingency line should it become necessary.
To the north, the fire has crossed the Pine Ridge Trail system and is backing towards the Big Sur River. Contingency lines are in place should it cross the river. Cooler, wetter conditions also helped lessen fire activity on the east side of the fire. The fire has crossed Longwood Creek and is currently on Olmstead Mountain.
    Weather:
A deep marine layer has moved in and will dominate the Highway 1 corridor in the area the next few days. Expect warmer and drier conditions by the weekend.

    Road Closures:
Highway 1 remains closed for public and firefighter safety. The northern closure is at mile marker 45.1 near the Big Sur Bakery, and the southern closure is near mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

The fire is 4,044.7 acres per the perimeter uploaded to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which is visible on the Watch Duty map under the Active Fire Perimeters map layer.

Update per the Los Padres National Forest on Facebook:
Current Situation: Cooler temperatures and high humidity mitigated temperatures and fire activity in some areas of the Timber Fire today, allowing crews a window to get good work done. However, the fire has been burning for several days in heavy vegetation, and this rain event will not fully extinguish the fire. Erratic winds from thunderstorm activity impacted the fire, and firefighters were pulled off assignments for their safety briefly this afternoon while a large thunder cell passed over the area.

The fire has burned almost to Highway 1 at Grimes Canyon. It continues to back slowly towards structures along Highway 1 between Ventana and Partington Ridge Road. Firefighters continue to prioritize structure defense in those areas.
Despite the heavy cloud cover at lower elevations, the higher elevations and eastern side of the fire remained clear, and the fire was still active. Crews are looking for new opportunities to suppress the fire directly along its active edge. The fire has progressed to the southeast over Logwood Creek. The use of aircraft was hampered for much of the day due to compromised visibility and inclement weather, but clearing skies late in the day allowed for helicopters to resume work on the top and east side of the fire.

Weather: Thunderstorm/shower activity is expected to taper off overnight as any lingering storms move eastward. A heavy marine layer is anticipated to settle in lower elevations overnight, with partial clearing anticipated by tomorrow afternoon. Clear skies and mild temperatures are anticipated in elevations over 2000’ ASL in advance of much warmer temperatures arriving this weekend.

Aug 12 at 9:34 PM EDT

The fire is now 7% contained, per the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).

Road Closure Update: The SR 1 closure has been adjusted on the Northside to the following location: Mile Post Marker 45.1 (by the Big Sur Bakery / Big Sur Post Office).

The Southside closure is still the same, per Los Padres National Forest on Facebook.

Current weather conditions overhead are producing cloud-to-ground lightning strikes over the Timber Fire area. For firefighter safety, crews have temporarily disengaged and retreated to safe locations until the storm system passes.
Once conditions improve and it is safe to resume operations, firefighters will reassess the fire and re-engage on the lines. Firefighter and public safety remain the highest priority as crews continue working to contain the fire, per Los Padres National Forest on Facebook.

    August 12, 2026 Operational Update
    3,774.6 Acres | 5% Contained
Fire activity increased early this morning and remained active around Partington Ridge and Coast Ridge Road along the southern edge of the fire. Crews continue protecting structures as the fire backs toward Highway 1.
On the west side near Partington Ridge, dozer operators and ground crews have constructed containment line to Highway 1. Crews are mopping up hot spots and conducting tactical patrols around homes. Near Ventana, firefighters are mopping up around structures and completing hand line. Rolling debris and embers along Coast Ridge Road caused spot fires, which were quickly contained through aggressive firefighting tactics.
On the northern flank, bulldozers are constructing line along a ridgeline toward Highway 1 and the Big Sur River. The eastern side remains active in wilderness areas, where firefighters are seeking safe opportunities to engage the fire.
Overnight fire activity increased above 1,000 feet on the western flank. Crews continue to prioritize structure protection east of Highway 1 from Ventana south to Partington Road. Hotshot crews are working through steep, heavy vegetation to establish containment lines as conditions allow, with additional resources arriving on scene.
Weather: Conditions may become more challenging this afternoon and evening. There is a 15–20% chance of thunderstorms entering the fire area, potentially bringing strong, erratic winds and unstable conditions. Elevated fire weather conditions are possible, with conditions expected to vary significantly across the incident.
Highway 1 Closure: Highway 1 remains closed between Fernwood Resort (47200 Highway 1) on the north and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point on the south.

    Timber Fire Update:

CURRENT SITUATION: The Timber Fire continued to back down towards structures in Ventana today, as well as toward structures along Grimes and Stoney Ridges as it spread south towards Partington Road. Firefighters remain actively engaged in structure defense this evening, and they will remain there overnight. Aircraft, including the DC10, was used heavily after the inversion lifted midday to assist firefighters on the ground in these areas.

Small up slope runs and single tree torching continued today, especially on the northern part of the fire and in the brush fields in the higher elevations.

While the goal is to keep the overall footprint of the Timber Fire as small as possible, resources currently on scene are focusing now on structure defense on the west side of the fire. As additional resources arrive, they will engage on the less accessible eastern edge.

WEATHER: Tonight’s weather is expected to be cool and cloudy at the coast, with a small chance of drizzle. Areas above approximately 1200-1500 feet are expected to remain clear and dry with light winds.
