To an outsider, the Pancho Arena in the tiny village of Felcsút looks wildly out of place: a 4,000‑seat, cathedral‑like soccer stadium made of soaring curved wooden beams sits in a community whose population would barely fill half its seats. The arena, named for legendary Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás, stands just across the street from the Orbán family’s weekend home, underscoring how Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has turned his birthplace into a showcase of grandiose projects that seem disconnected from local needs.
As Hungary heads toward a national election that could end Orbán’s 16‑year grip on power, the stadium and its adjoining soccer academy—costing more than $200 million—have become symbols of the government’s alleged corruption. Anti‑corruption watchdog K‑Monitor, led by Sándor Léderer, uses the venue to illustrate how taxpayer money is diverted through tax breaks and contracts that benefit Orbán’s friends and family instead of public services such as hospitals and schools. A nearby €2 million, EU‑funded narrow‑gauge railway that was supposed to serve 2,000 daily riders now runs only on weekends, further highlighting the disparity between promised investment and actual benefit.
Opposition figures like Péter Magyar and MP Ákos Hadházy have organized tours of Felcsút and neighbouring Alcsút to expose what they call “Orbán‑land.” Visitors have seen the demolished Hatvanpuszta Castle, now replaced by a lavish family mansion, a golf course owned by Orbán’s close associate Lőrinc Mészáros, and a privately guarded estate whose opulence starkly contrasts with the poverty felt by many Hungarians. The visceral reactions of locals—such as Júlia Molnár, who described the sight as “infuriating”—are being used by the opposition to rally voters around the theme that corruption and extravagant spending have left the country impoverished and in need of change.
