Just back from measuring our latitude (which I do roughly four times a year) and, for the first time, our longitude.
Latitude was pretty good, got to within about 15 km.
Longitude less good. Got about 6.8 degrees, but the actual value is about 3 degrees.
Wondering what went wrong ... need to think about how to "fix" that.

Seriously though, I did enjoy visiting #Greenwich and seeing all the brave attempts at creating an accurate clock to determine #longitude, on display. Amazing that the winning design adopted was so compact too!

East: 178°1′4″E, Gisborne, New Zealand
South: 45°52′27″S, Dunedin, New Zealand
West: 175°12′0″W, Nuku'alofa, TongaIt was actually fun to review all those. I was surprised to see NZ on there twice. I had thought Tasmania might be farther south. Also, I was expecting Tonga to be the farthest east I had been, not the farthest west.

Ten years ago, I helped launch the new Longitude Prize when six of us (including the late Michael Mosley) presented six potential topics to the public for them to choose the focus of the £10M prize. They chose antimicrobial resistance, the challenge of bugs becoming resistant to antibiotics.
Today, the winner of that prize was announced: Sysmex Astrego for an impressive diagnostic test. Congratulations to them!

On February 4, 1749, English watchmaker Thomas Earnshaw was born. Earnshaw further simplified the process of marine chronometer production, making them available to the general public. He is also known for his improvements to the transit clock at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London and his invention of a chronometer escapement and a form of bimetallic compensation balance.
