Ubuntu 26.04.1 is here!

Ubuntu 26.04.1 is finally ready and is now available to the public, as September will find its way to us to introduce itself with a lot of excitement. The first point release brings a lot of improvements compared to the original version which was out back in April. And the most exciting thing is:

If you’re running 24.04.x, starting from today, you can finally upgrade to 26.04.1 by normal means!

As point releases are usually made for LTS releases with upgrades from the previous LTS release being enabled after every first point release, such as upgrading from 22.04.x to 24.04.1 and from 24.04.x to 26.04.1, this release is going to be a lot more exciting.

To upgrade your system by normal means from 24.04 LTS, you can either run the Update Manager or run the terminal and issue the sudo do-release-upgrade command. This way, you should be able to get a banner that tells you that the Ubuntu 26.04.1 version is now available. However, the download may be huge in the order of gigabytes, depending on how many applications are installed.

The download may take several minutes, depending on your internet connection speed and how many applications are there on your system, while the installation may take as few as 15 minutes, depending on your applications and your computer performance. Never interrupt the upgrade process, or else you may have to either recover your system or backup your data and re-install the Ubuntu distribution using the 26.04.1 ISO image.

In the case of laptops, you’ll need to charge your laptop fully before upgrading, but it’s recommended to keep your laptop plugged in while upgrading to ensure that there are no interruptions. For PC towers, it’s recommended to keep it plugged in to the stable power source to avoid interruptions. Consult your electricity company for possible blackout schedules to plan your upgrade.

I was surprised and heartened to see so many grateful and positive comments below a post from the #Blender foundation deprecating an “LTS” release after its two year support life cycle ended. My unscientific working defn of how long the “long” in #longtermsupport entails was much more generous than two years!
