‘Explosive increase’ of #ticks that cause meat allergy in US due to #climate risis
The #lonestarticks are known to be unusually aggressive and can provoke an allergy in bitten people whereby they cannot eat red meat without enduring a severe reaction, such as breaking out in hives and even the risk of heart attacks. The condition, known as alpha-gal syndrome, has proliferated from just a few dozen known cases in 2009 to as many as 450,000 now.

As many as 450,000 Americans may be living with #alphagal syndrome, a #meat #allergy that is linked to #tick bites, with many of those people going undiagnosed, according to two new studies from #CDC.#LoneStarTicks, are belienve to be primary culprits of the #disease in US. Researchers found that 78% of #healthcare providers who were surveyed had little or no knowledge of the condition, and many clinicians who had heard of the syndrome were not sure how to diagnose it.

Cases of Heartland virus are increasing. It should be considered in all patients with undiagnosed fever, diarrhea, myalgias, and elevated liver enzymes who live in areas where Lone Star ticks are found. #Heartland virus can also cause encephalopathy and hemophagocytic syndrome (both potentially fatal).
#LoneStarticks also spread ehrlichiosis, tularemia, southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), and Bourbon virus. It may also cause alpha-gal syndrome (red meat allergy).
