Today's historic photo of the day: near-new 1500V DC loco 8649 heads the Perth-bound 'Indian Pacific' at Katoomba, NSW, January 26 1986
Fifty 86 class electric #locos were built between 1983 and 1985 to haul freight and long distance passenger trains west from Sydney to Lithgow over the Blue Mountains, north from Sydney to Broadmeadow on the then newly extended electrification of that line, and eventually also to Port Kembla. Whilst technically successful, most of these beasts had short lives.

Any train experts who can shed some more light on this graffiti depiction of a loco, almost certainly seen on the line below the bridge on which this is inscribed in slate at Porth Penrhyn, then exporting from the world's largest slate quarry at Bethesda, north Wales.
Any info will be included in the Historical Environment Record, so more than idle curiosity!

Took some pics yesterday of my small Lovers Communication System keyboard prototype.

Back in the workshop today to finish my first #LoCoS keyboard prototype! I still have the software part to finish as well but it is really exciting to explore new ways of thinking about writing in the digital age.
Took me some time to do it because my assistant was really picky and wanted to validate all my design choices.

We have also talked about digitalization, as I understand now how he has constructed all LoCoS shapes and how I should improve mine. He still has a sharp mind and a good eye.
He grew up in a kimono shop owned by his family and was surrounded by Japanese family Crest design. He still owns catalogs, this one has a hundred years old I think.↓ 4/5

He invited me to his apartment full of documentation about language systems, pictogram design, and his research on LoCoS when he was working on one of the first courses in the world on pictogram design at Zokei University around 1966. I had to buy a portable scanner to scan his postcard sized archives full of drawings for my own research and only had the time to scan a drop in the ocean.

I had the chance to exchange with him on multiple occasions during this month, listen to his life, and explore his archives together. He was really kind and humble about his career and was always eager to make me discover new things as he did during all his personal life and with his students, even with his current health issues.

When you see LoCoS, you might think about Blissymbols. While Bliss chose to develop a written language, the invention of Ota combines shape, meaning, and sound so that it can be spoken.
Another main difference between the two systems is the vision of its creator. While Bliss wanted to keep control of his language and live from royalty, Ota knew he couldn't handle it by himself, asking for help to work on his creation with others. Accessibility is key.↓ 3/8

The 45 class are Alco-powered locos built for NSW railways by AE Goodwin, Alco's Australian licensee, between 1962 and 1964. Following the success of the first sixty 44 class (1957-1961) the NSW Railways opted for locos with the newer Alco 251C engine instead of the 251B in the 44 class, and to change to a hood body style instead of the full width carbody of the 44 class.

A propósito del video escrachando la FLISoL que sacaron estos dos youtubers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOYoUdEKSIo), esta es mi respuesta que de inmediato bloquearon, así que la dejo acá públicamente, para que la lean, ya que público era el video que ellos publicaron. Me da bronca cuando alguien quiere socavar y bastardear un proyecto de divulgación como lo es la FLISoL en el área del software libre. No me gusta decir las cosas que he hecho, ni alardear de mi humilde currículum que a mis 42 pirulos podría estar mucho mejor, pero como la ocasión amerita, creo que puedo decir que tengo algo de experiencia en divulgación, organización de congresos y gestión de grupos de trabajo. Trabajé 17 años en el Observatorio astronómico Los Molinos donde 7 de esos 17, fui encargado, con personal a cargo, organizando innumerable cantidad de actividades de divulgación, publicando materiales con licencias CC, fui jurado en tribunales de secundaria y jurado en al menos 2 concursos fotográficos, soy co-autor de un libro de astronomía para 4º año de secundaria que usan los docentes hoy en día, trabajo en formación docente desde hace 10 años, he dado cursos de perfeccionamiento a docentes desde hace muchos años en el CFE y el IPES, y también he sido líder en delegaciones de olimpiadas de astronomía acompañando a estudiantes a Bolivia, Brasil y mismo acá en Uruguay y evaluador en Ferias Nacionales de Clubes de Ciencia. He participado en las FLISoL por lo menos del año 2008 en adelante y mi primera charla en una de ellas, fue en 2011, hace 13 años. He organizado eventos como la fiesta lanzamiento de Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx en Facultad de Ciencias y debo haber participado al menos en la organización de unos 10 congresos de astronomía nacionales y algunos regionales, como el Taller de Ciencias Planetarias en Maldonado y la la Reunión Regional Latinoamericana de la IAU siendo moderador e integrando el comité organizador local y aparte de todo eso, sostengo un servidor autogestionado desde hace casi 10 años, entonces me molesta un poco que un par de fantasmas hagan una pataleta (puedo entender al pibe, pero el docente deja mucho que desear), denostando a nuestra hermosa FLISoL. Espero que se disculpen públicamente, pero lo dudo porque parece que están ocultando todo, mi comentario, esta captura de su canal de Telegram, pero la información quiere ser libre.
