  2. What do the dramatic local election results really reveal? A perfect storm for the Conservatives in the local elections doesn’t necessarily translate into a majority for Labour in a general election | Andy Brown

  3. CW: Local Elections

We are certainly taking down the Tories bit by bit.

Over 1,000 seats they have lost & now Labour is the largest party in local government.

  4. 229 of 230 councils now declared, the Tories have lost 1058 seats, Labour gained 536, the LibDems gained 405 & Greens gained 241. Tactical voting and #PR will banish the extreme right, the electorate have shown that. #LocalElections2023 #GeneralElectionNow

  5. What the local elections show about the weakness of English fascism
So although none of the big-name English fascist groups did get candidates elected, some of the ‘independents’ elected this May in England may actually be neo-Nazis. But the fact they can do better by hiding their party lo

  6. It's days like this, when I'm avoiding the coronation by trying to find something entertaining in a spreadsheet of local election numbers, that I wonder about my life choices.

  8. CW: (UK politics, Tories)

Just a refusal to acknowledge reality.

    Q: Tory policies?
    A: PUTIN

It's never their fault. Always someone else's.

  9. There is a school of thought that says the Tories must be swept from power by a strong, united party with a massive majority. Personally I don’t care that they are replaced by a government obliged by the numbers to work cooperatively with others to get their policies through. That would be a good thing, a democratic thing. The Tories will, of course, do all in their power to delay, avoid or cancel future general elections. Because that is who they are. #LocalElections2023 #GetTheToriesOutNow

  10. It’s worth remembering that 2019 was also a bad year for the Tories in local elections. And they have lost 1,000 seats compared to that. A truly disastrous (for them) result. 🎉 #LocalElections2023 #ToryMeltdown

  11. Well the Tories got an absolute drubbing even with #voterSuppression. Imagine how much worse it would have been for them if everyone was actually allowed to vote! #voterID #LocalElections2023 #ToryBritain

  12. Hilarious that Education Minister Robert Halfon thinks the #CostOfLivingCrisis and problems in the #NHS are “external factors” that have nothing to do with the government. What planet are these people living on? #ToryBritain #LocalElections2023 bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65503

  14. Today I'm in a traditionally very Conservative area, which is also in a conservative area.

Conservative supporter signs outside houses: 0.
Not-the-Cons opposition party signs: lost count!
Bunting, flags, and monarchist tat on display: 0.

Met a random tourist who drew my attention to it and then confided her own not-the-Cons postal vote in that whispered undertone used by polite middle-class middle-aged English people who don't talk about politics with strangers.

Mind you, Cons are used to indulging their disgusting proclivities in private so I won't celebrate too soon. :riot:

  15. There's an upcoming election which is likely to have useful results for my communities, but I also prefer to subvert "first past the post" systems whenever possible so I offered my vote to the secondary school kids at my local bus stop. I told them there are two conditions:

    a. They reach a group agreement (I provided decision-making resources based on consensus processes - plural - but they were responsible for choosing their own method).
    b. They give at least two reasons for their chosen candidate (individual not party).

Result: a decision based on unanimity-minus-one (who recused himself rather than blocking - he claimed he's not interested enough to participate) and they've learned about decision-making processes not based on majority voting. I also think their candidate will win and is the most likely to serve our communities but that's beside the point.

Only 10 days now to register to vote and 18 days to sort your photo ID or postal vote (details in the linked post):

  16. Respect to my local Green Party who were first to remind every household here about new requirements for voter ID, despite their voters being relatively engaged and likely to already know, especially compared to the ageing Cons who vote for their opponents. Local green-black grassroots alliances have a high success rate for community projects here. It's a shame the national Green Party have typical small party problems with entryism and an undertow of ecofascist tendencies. Nonetheless it's the Conservative government who're excluding ordinary people from community decision-making processes, this time using voter suppression.

My simple guide, with links, to UK voter registration and ID (7 week deadline in mid April):

  17. UK voting and ID for elections on 4 May 2023 in England and Wales and Scotland, and 18 May in Northern Ireland. I'm still seeing significant misinformation about this so here's information for England, and you can check the same website for the rest of the UK (iirc Wales and Scotland are similar and N.I. is a law unto itself).

    1. First register to vote with your local authority. Deadline depends on whether you also need to apply for ID so do this as soon as possible.

    electoralcommission.org.uk/i-a

    2. If you have government photo ID and intend to vote in person at a polling station then check if it's valid. Deadline depends on whether you need to re-apply for ID so do this as soon as possible.

    electoralcommission.org.uk/i-a

3a. If you don't have current government photo ID then the best way to ensure access to a vote is to apply for a postal vote but you need online access, and a printer, and access to a post office (or hand delivery to its destination). Deadline 5pm 17 April 2023.

    electoralcommission.org.uk/i-a

3b. The government ID linked below is another option for in person voting at a polling station but you need online access, and a digital photo, and a printer, and access to a post office (or hand delivery to its destination). Deadline 5pm 25 April 2023.

    electoralcommission.org.uk/i-a

3c. You can also vote by proxy, but this is more complicated and most experts advise against it unless you have no other option. If you can't find out for yourself how to do this then it's probably not the best method for you.
