NORTHAMPTON — "#GrowFoodNorthampton is growing.
"The local food and #farming justice group has raised over $1 million for an effort to increase support for vulnerable community members, it said in a statement.
"The money will go toward providing more #FreshFoods to families experiencing hunger, will establish #CommunityGardens at #LowIncome housing sites, will support #LocalFarms and #gardeners, and will go toward implementation of #ClimateResilience measures.
" 'All of these efforts are critical right now due to drastic #FederalCuts to local food and farming programs, the ongoing #ClimateCrisis, and ever-growing #inequities in the local food system and beyond,' the statement said.
"The fundraising effort began late last year. There was an 'outpouring of support,' and the financial goal was met ahead of schedule, the group said.
"The organization will still accept donations through the rest of the summer, and supporters can opt to add their names to a campaign contributors list, which will be installed at the Community Garden in Florence.
"The organization also said it would accept non-monetary support from the community.
" 'Community members are invited to attend summer events, share the campaign with friends and family, and volunteer their time,' the statement said."

" '#FeedTheHungry' is meeting people where they’re at to make the community as a whole healthier.
"From #okra to #nectarines, a new farmer’s market in Garden City has no shortage of healthy options. The idea for this farmer’s market came from a lack of resources when it comes to fresh foods.
" 'Trying to address #FoodDeserts in this community. And what does a #FoodDesert mean? That means limited access to fresh food,' said Charice Stroud, a volunteer with Feed the Hungry.
"Stroud is working alongside state representative Carl Gilliard to increase that access with the start of the first '#WithoutWalls' #FarmersMarket.
"On Saturday, this new farmer market kicked off with #pickling demonstrations, fresh juice making, farmer’s selling #LocalProduce, and more.
" 'It builds a healthier community, right? That’s our overall goal,' Stroud explained.
"Feed the hungry is partnering with #AgraUnity, a coalition of #BlackFarmers that focuses on supplying the food deserts In #WestChathamCounty.
"Those local farmers will be selling their products, allowing people in the community to access farm to table food at a more affordable price.
" 'We want to empower people. And a part of that is your health, what you’re consuming each and every day. So, you can come in and get some good ideas for what to bring back to your home and your family,' Stroud said.
"The 'Without Walls' Farmers Market will be held every 4th Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4704 Augusta Road in Garden City."

Fresh Fruits and Fortune
I went out one morning to photograph Palafrugell, walking around the town, exploring the streets. It’s a small town with narrow road and tall buildings, with a few public squares dotted around. Near one is a vegetable market where I spotted a man buying a lottery card.
The ONCE lottery, seen in the photo, is unique in Spain for being operated by the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles, an organisation founded in 1938 to support the blind and visually impaired. Many of the lottery vendors, like the one pictured, are themselves visually impaired, making each ticket sale a contribution to social inclusion and support for people with disabilities.

"Did you know that on average produce travels 1500 miles to reach the shelves in your grocery store? 1500 miles will take you from Miami to Boston – certainly not a quick trip! The terms 'seasonal eating' and 'locally-grown' are popular amongst health fanatics and eco-warriors… but what’s all of the hype about? What are the true benefits? Why should we eat seasonally and locally throughout the year?
So How Do You Eat Seasonal & Local?
- Keep in mind that what is in season for you may not be seasonal for someone else – it all depends on your location! Southern California has a very different climate than the freezing fields of Maine.
- If you go shopping at your local farmers market, you are automatically eating locally AND seasonally! It’s a win-win. Farmers markets are a great way to support your community, buy fresh nutritious produce, and meet the people growing your food! Check to see if your farmers markets move indoors in the winter – many of them do!
- Join a local CSA (“Community-Supported Agriculture”)! In a CSA, consumers subscribe to a membership and share the risk of harvest with the farmer. In return, the consumers receive a big box of nutritious, fresh, seasonal and local produce every couple of weeks.
- Opt for locally-grown produce within your grocery store. Many stores, including Whole Foods, mark food that is local. This is a great way to easily support your local farmers.
- Start your own organic, seasonal garden! If you have the outdoor space (or even indoor vertical space) start a little garden. This is a great way to get exceptionally fresh food right from your backyard.
- Buy in bulk, then freeze and can your local produce for future use! If you plan ahead and properly store them, those summer strawberries can last you all throughout the winter!
- The Seasonal Food Guide is an excellent tool to get a better understanding of what is local and seasonal to your specific state. Local Harvest is another great resource to find local farms, community-supported agriculture (CSAs), farmers’ markets, and more."

Penzance council have upgraded its vehicle fleet to be all electric as part of its Climate Emergency Action Plan.They estimate this will save 7.3 tonnes of CO2 a year. It's also worth noting that the council have also taken steps like switching out petrol landscaping equipment for electric and using locally produced food.
