  2. Shoppers' Drug Mart's system reliability has gone to absolute pot since becoming part of the Loblaw empire.

Their online pharmacy system has been completely broken for me today in both Firefox and Vivaldi (with reasonable privacy settings, considering it's personal medical information). Submit a refill request, server responds with a 400 error. Lots of CORS errors in the console - what else is new.

I'm going to have to turn off uBlock Origin and try again, aren't I? FFS...

  3. "Oh, food inflation's not that bad."

President's Choice coffee - which the grocery shrink-ray hit, so it's not even a two-pound container anymore - at one of Loblaw's chains here in my town now has a regular price of $26.

    $26.

Without trying to be all Get Off My Lawn, I used to pay $6 for a larger container.

  5. This is way outside my usual wheelhouse. It's a food review.

So, #Loblaw and its umpteen variants and brandings have a new series of President's Choice potato chip flavours. It's called the "Canadian Series" in their "World of Flavours". Trying to cash in on the newfound Canadian patriotism, I guess.

I don't remember all the flavours. There's poutine, of course, though I haven't bought that one.

There's "Halifax Donair", which I did try. Was not impressed. Kind of a mystery meat-ish base flavour with some not-too-specific seasonings on top. I really like donairs, but this didn't remind me of it very much.

The other one I bought was "Spicy Caesar". I like the cocktail, but I was worried that this one would end up tasting like ketchup chips (which I dislike) with a bit of something else added. I was pleasantly surprised; it doesn't taste of ketchup chips. The tomato tastes like actual tomato juice. Presumably there's a note of clam in there, though it's too subtle for me to pick up. There's definitely some celery salt (or at least celery root) flavour. And there's a little spice kick to it, like tabasco (and maybe worchestershire). Surprisingly good!

So, cocktail-flavoured potato chips: works, at least for this cocktail.

  6. It somehow seems very Canadian that the "huge Canadian grocery companies are illegally overcharging/underweighting meat again after they got caught a year ago and promised they'd solved that 'error'" scandal is getting less press than the "some maple syrup producer in Quebec got caught selling fake maple syrup containing >50% cane sugar" scandal.

Days since I had to report a major Canadian retailer to their marketing mail host for not honouring marketing communications preferences, sending non-working links for "manage your preferences" or "unsubscribe", having a non-working link in the List-Help: header of an unsolicited marketing email, and having a website that errors out when trying to use the "contact us" function:

  14. I’ve been a fan of the #PCExpress pickup service since 2020. Four parking spots are reserved at our local Independent Grocer for customers who pay the PC Express fee.

Today two spots were occupied by the store owner’s new truck. Clearly this guy doesn’t give a shit about his customers. #Loblaw

  15. People who've been reading me for a while may know I really like #hummus.

A while back, I posted about buying a different brand when I was shopping at a different store than I usually go to. It was a brand called Fontaine that I wasn't familiar with - made in Quebec, I believe.

It was awful. Actually inedible. I had one bite and had to throw the container away.

Well, yesterday I was at my local Real Canadian #Superstore - the local flavour of big #Loblaw grocery store - and all the space in the cooler normally occupied by #Sabra hummus - the brand I usually buy, and quite like - was instead taken up by "President's Choice" (house brand) stuff which I don't recall them having before. And there was also Fontaine-branded stuff, which I've never seen there before.

And, uh-oh, the President's Choice stuff is the same sickly pale colour as the Fontaine stuff. Could it be made by #Fontaine for them?

I needed hummus, and those were the two brands available, so I got the President's Choice. And yep, I would bet it's made by Fontaine, although the packaging has absolutely zero info about the source on it, other than "prepared in Canada" [1]. It's #inedible, and I threw out another container.

I guess I'm going to have to make my own. There are a million recipes out there - any favourites you'd care to share?

[1] Read this as "not made in Canada". They probably import chickpea paste and the other ingredients and just put them through a mixer in Canada.
