Indigo Forager
Yesterday morning, Charlie and I decided to take my first cup of coffee out on the porch. A bird showed up across the way, and for a moment I almost ignored it in favor of the coffee. But curiosity won out, so I went back inside, grabbed my camera, and returned to stalk the bird. In my excitement, I forgot to check the camera settings and didn’t realize I’d nudged the F‑stop too high, so the originals came out a bit dark.
The bird is a Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), and it’s actually the first adult I’ve seen. I have a few cleaner shots, but none with a pose as interesting as this one. It looks like the heron is wading through a pond or a lake, but it’s really just a big puddle that forms after heavy rain.

Tidal Pool Hunters
These two similar looking birds are two different species. The bird in the foreground is a snowy egret (Egretta thula), while the larger bird farther back is an immature little blue heron (Egretta caerulea).

Little Blue Heron
The existence of this bird species was unknown to me until this morning. I should have known that if there is a great blue heron, there must be a little blue heron (Egretta caerulea). This bird is an all-white juvenile which explains why I initially thought it to be a great egret until I started noticing discrepancies.

Little Blue Heron
After a session photographing the majestic Great Egrets, Glossy Ibis, and White Ibis, Bhavna and I decided to explore further beneath the bridge at the Roy Gillian Welcome Center in Ocean City. The dense foliage and humid air made it an ideal spot for birdwatching, but it also attracted gnats. Thankfully, I had come prepared with long sleeves and pants, while Bhavna relied on bug spray. Unfortunately, neither of us had thought to bring a head net, and the gnats were relentless.

A juvenile Little Blue Heron with wings spread, wading in shallow water and trying to scare up a meal. As it matures, the plumage will turn a beautiful dark blue/gray on the body and a purplish/maroon color on the head. Juveniles resemble the Snowy Egret.
