“Current monitoring focuses on hydrogen fluoride and particulate matter, but traditional air quality indexes measure ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particle pollution —not heavy metals. However, when batteries burn, it is reasonable to assume that small heavy metal particles are released into the air.”

So, a #BatteryEnergyStorageSystem is in the works a few miles from where we live -- on the #SacoRiver. The local fire departments are already working on keeping on top of an incident if one happens, and knowing what to do if a #LithiumBatteryFire breaks out (the area where we live was mostly burned down in 1947, so fires are a big deal around here). It's something to be aware of. #LithiumBatteries aren't the saviors they are being made out to be. We need to invest in #SodiumIonBatteries and #SaltWaterBatteries and anything BUT #Lithium at this point -- ASAP!

@Thebratdragon It seems the #Tesla batteries were involved in the fire. And it seems that #PacificGasAndElectric also had a hand in "ensuring safety" at the facility. And they want to keep #DiabloCanyonNuclearPlant going? smh
"This is not the plant's first fire; it experienced another in September 2022, when an individual battery storage unit rose in flames.
"Operations resumed in December 2022 after the Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG), a third-party energy safety consultant, finalized a review of the situation. PG&E, in conjunction with Tesla, the battery provider, 'implemented corrective actions and conducted extensive system testing,' as PG&E announced.
"The exact cause of the current incident at the plant remains uncertain. Still, ESRG's 2022 report identified that last year's fire was sparked by 'an equipment installation issue resulting in water ingress caused the battery's cells to overheat and catch fire,' according to the press release.
"Due to the blaze, #Highway1 near the site has been shut down, as reported by KION concerning the California Highway Patrol."

- Failures during normal operations—such as overcharging, overheating, or errors in the battery management system—can lead to hazardous situations. These failures may arise from external factors like extreme weather, physical damage, or human errors, including inadequate maintenance.
"It’s important to note that failures can occur in different components of the BESS. While the batteries themselves often receive the most attention with respect to safety concerns, other critical aspects, such as control systems, transformers, fire suppression systems, and cooling mechanisms, can also play significant roles in influencing the overall safety of the system.
"For instance, if control systems are not programmed or calibrated correctly, they may fail to monitor and manage battery performance effectively, leading to overheating or even thermal runaway. Similarly, inadequately designed fire suppression systems may not activate promptly in the event of a fire, allowing the situation to escalate. Additionally, ineffective cooling mechanisms can contribute to excessive heat buildup."

BESS Failure Incident Database
The database compiles information about stationary battery energy storage system (BESS) failure incidents. There are two tables in this database:
- Stationary Energy Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks utility-scale and commercial and industrial (C&I) failures.
- Other Storage Failure Incidents – this table tracks incidents that do not fit the criteria for the first table. This could include failures involving the manufacturing, transportation, storage, and recycling of energy storage.Residential energy storage system failures are not currently tracked.

The BESS Failure Incident Database was initiated in 2021 as part of a wider suite of BESS safety research after the concentration of lithium ion BESS fires in South Korea and the Surprise, AZ, incident in the US. The database was created to inform energy storage industry stakeholders and the public on BESS failures.

There used to be a joke about how #SolarFarms were immune to fires and explosions (as opposed to #NuclearPowerPlants). But a quick search revealed that those do happen -- but the cause is usually the #LithiumIon batteries, not the solar panels!

Rice researchers develop innovative #BatteryRecycling method
A research team at #RiceUniversity led by James Tour, the T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Chemistry and professor of materials science and nanoengineering, is tackling the environmental issue of efficiently recycling #lithiumIon batteries amid their increasing use.
"The team has pioneered a new method to extract purified active materials from battery waste as detailed in the journal Nature Communications on July 24. Their findings have the potential to facilitate the effective separation and recycling of valuable battery materials at a minimal fee, contributing to a greener production of electric vehicles (#EVs).
"'With the surge in battery use, particularly in EVs, the need for developing sustainable #recycling methods is pressing,' Tour said.
"Conventional recycling techniques typically involve breaking down battery materials into their elemental forms through energy-intensive thermal or chemical processes that are costly and have significant #environmental impacts.
"The team proposed that magnetic properties could facilitate the separation and purification of spent battery materials.
"Their innovation uses a method known as solvent-free flash Joule heating (#FJH). This technique devised by Tour involves passing a current through a moderately resistive material to rapidly heat and transform it into other substances.
"Using FJH, the researchers heated battery waste to 2,500 Kelvin within seconds, creating unique features with magnetic shells and stable core structures. The magnetic separation allowed for efficient purification.
"During the process, the #cobalt-based battery cathodes — typically used in EVs and associated with high financial, environmental and social costs — unexpectedly showed magnetism in the outer spinel cobalt oxide layers, allowing for easy separation.
"The researchers’ approach resulted in a high battery metal recovery yield of 98% with the value of battery structure maintained.
"'Notably, the metal impurities were significantly reduced after separation while preserving the structure and functionality of the materials,' Tour said. “The bulk structure of battery materials remains stable and is ready to be reconstituted into new cathodes.'
"Rice graduate students Weiyin Chen and Jinhang Chen as well as postdoctoral researcher and Rice Academy Junior Fellow Yi Cheng are the co-lead authors of the study."
