  7. There a mobile ice creamery coming to Lithgow tonight. It's a sunny day & currently feels like 6C/43F but will feel like -1C/32F when they close up. I'm guessing it'll only be those born and bred here who'll be having that. I'm inside with a thermal singlet on under my top lol. #winterinaustralia #lithgow

  8. Well! That was a bit chillier than expected. The bureau estimated a bulb low of -2°C at dawn, we got a bulb of -6 plus a windchill of -4.

It's nice and sunny today, though; chilly t-shirt weather of 6 with a couple of degrees windchill. Beautiful.

  9. #transrights #Rowling #Lithgow #HBO

"Not long after addressing Harry Potter fans’ concerns that an American actor will play the British wizard Albus Dumbledore, John Lithgow is turning to a different criticism of his casting in HBO‘s Potter series: backlash over boarding a project exec-produced by J.K. Rowling.

In a recent interview with UK newspaper The Times, Lithgow — who was officially cast as Dumbledore in HBO’s series adaptation earlier this month — says he didn’t expect the Rowling-related criticism he’s received for accepting the role. Since 2018, Harry Potter author Rowling’s comments on sex and gender have widely been deemed transphobic, and many Potter fans have expressed frustration that she’s on board as an EP for HBO’s show; in turn, Lithgow has received many critical comments on his Instagram page (among other venues) for his choice to play Dumbledore."

  10. Tonight I got to the Hassans Wall Lookout at Lithgow about 10 minutes after the peak of auroral activity, but still managed to get some photos and had some great chats for the next two hours with all the people who were also there.

  11. Enough water for #nuclear reactors in #NSW but scientists worry about #wildlife

    July 19, 2024

"The federal opposition has proposed seven #NuclearPowerPlants across the country if it wins the next election.

"Its plan involves building the plants on retiring or retired #coal sites, including two in #NewSouthWales, at #Liddell in the #HunterValley and #MountPiper near #Lithgow.

"The environmental impact of both [closed-loop and once through] systems has raised concerns in #conservation groups.

"While the closed-loop system does not return water warmer to the supply than when it was taken out, the once-through cooling process does.

"Professor Johnson said changes to the temperature of #LakeLyell and #LakeLiddell could be harmful aquatic native #wildlife.

"'#Ecosystems are evolved and used to a certain temperature range, so when temperatures are higher than that, it can change all the things that live in the river,' she said.

"Jacqui Mills from the NSW Nature Conservation Council believed the once-through cooling method could have #catastrophic consequences.

"'If you have hot water discharges, it will very likely kill microorganisms,' Ms Mills said.

"'That has a flow-on impact for the creatures that rely on them like #platypus. It basically disrupts the #environment.'

"Julie Favell from the Lithgow Environment Group said recent examples of coal and other #mining industries breaching #environmental #regulations gave her 'no confidence' that a #NuclearPlant would be safe.

"'Over the past 20 years we have seen so many impacts on #swamps, #waterways, the damage in most cases is irreversible,' she said.

"'You cannot erase human error and natural disasters. There would be nothing left if one of those incidents happened.'"

  16. Fun place, #Lithgow. There’s a prison down the highway, and about a third of the town is either families of prisoners, former prisoners, or petty crims servicing prisoners.

The train station is the end of the Blue Mountains Line; it’s an open secret that #meth transships through the bus interchange atop the stairs to the rest of central west #NSW.

I used to live a street over from where this robbery took place, and it was one of the *nicer* parts of town.
