  1. I am currently rather enjoying my first read-through of the Discworld series by Sir Terry Pratchett. As of today, I am a stone's throw away from finishing Interesting Times and starting Maskerade (probably later tonight).

The quote below was the first quote that I deemed worthy of retaining for posterity, upon my first reading of The Colour of Magic.

    ----------------------------------

"His was the air of one who is unjustly put upon, who is dreaded and feared, yet who is the only friend of the poor and the best doctor for the mortally wounded....

Death, although exceptionally busy at all times, decided that He now had a hobby."

From: "The Colour of Magic" by Sir Terry Pratchett (1983)

  2. Ah yes, another thrilling episode of "Darwin's Greatest Hits" where we get to sift through quotes like we're on a literary Easter egg hunt. 🎩✨ Apparently, realizing that the HMS Beagle was more than just a jolly cruise took a whopping three episodes. 😴📚

    Gee, he was good.

“Her house became the refuge of young men puling in puberty, mourning over lost virtue, and aching to lose some more.”

  4. RICKI TARR:
I've got a story to tell you.
    ...
And if it's true, which I think it is, you boys are going to need a whole new organization.

    (_Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy_)

I was reminded again how things written by John Le Carré decades ago relate to US politics today.

Both the book and the TV series are well worth reading and watching more than once.

  5. "There are no dangerous questions, only dangerous answers."
    (John Le Carré, _Smiley's People_)

    Corollary:
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

  6. “I don't know why I thought of my brother's voice,
miles and miles of it. And I turned
from the past because I had none.
Dear reader, whoever you are, remember,
    among all, remember.”

  8. "We fight for lost causes because we know that our defeat and dismay may be the preface to our successors’ victory, though that victory itself will be temporary; we fight rather to keep something alive than in the expectation that anything will triumph."

  11. Debo hacer a un lado la fea acumulación de la existencia y reencontrar la mirada que la amó lo bastante, al principio, para mostrar sus cimientos. Lo que me queda en la vida está en este ataque, este temblor.

I must cast off life's ugly accumulation and find again the gaze that loved it enough in the beginning to display its foundation. What is left for me to life exists in this assault, this tremor.

  13. "Listen to *me*," said the demon, as he placed his hand upon my head...

And I stood in the morass among the tall lilies, and the rain fell upon my head - and the lilies sighed one unto the other in the solemnity of their desolation.

  14. “Lest we forget,
a morgue is also a community center.”

    - Ocean Vuong, Time Is a Mother

(From a DVAN book review: “In his sophomore poetry collection, Time is a Mother, Ocean Vuong meditates on how we think about death as individuals and as a community, and how we shoulder the weight of intergenerational trauma. Vuong reframes death and mourning as lonely processes into something communal.”)
