Jahrhundert.
Als Literatur empfehle ich "The making of the atomic bomb" von Richard Rhodes.

  23. I just read this article by @brainpicker which made me muse on that genre of "liberal feminist historical inspo"

y'know, a pantheon of women who in life had diverse values & goals, but who are treated as real-life superheroes for feminists today to emulate

As I read about Austrian physicist #LiseMeitner (November 7, 1878–October 27, 1968), the anger I felt at the systemic injustice that greeted her brilliant intellect gave way to unease. It felt familiar: so was I falling into a didactic affective regime?

Was I glossing a real person's complex life? Would I want my own life to be flattened into a teachable moment?

Not that I'm saying Popova does this! She precisely and even-handedly contextualises Meitner's achievements.

But the article reminded me how easy it is to become complacent about what a 'settled past' can teach us. There seems a real tension in our thinking about history:

    1) "the past is strange to us now; history must help us see how far we've come"
    2) "human nature is essentially stable over time; history must bring out these continuities"

We want to see the people of the past as people just like us, who had emotions, ideas & values we can recognise; but we also can't help seeing our own time as more advanced and enlightened

I am currently reading 'The Years of Rice and Salt' by Kim Stanley Robinson: an alternate history novel inspired by the Buddhist Eightfold Path. And it seems to me that Buddhism attempts to reconcile the 'cyclical' versus 'teleological' understanding of the past: that humankind desires the same things and makes the same mistakes over and over, yet it's also possible to learn from these mistakes and to move through history on a morally progressive trajectory

(I have not read much about Buddhism; I'm just going on the way the novel characterises it)

But there's also a secular, commonsensical way we believe that we are more advanced than people in the past

This seems the sense of feminists today reviewing women's past struggles: "she fought with 1 hand tied behind her back; there's no excuse for me, who faces fewer barriers!"

But I also want to identify with Lise Meitner as a human, not just as an icon of science. Popova's article – based substantially on a biography of Meitner by fellow scientist Ruth Lewin Sime – highlights that the suppression of Meitner's achievements was appalling (and deeply disappointing to her).

But she also cherished her personal friendships and said, in a speech late in life, that science encourages people to reach beyond themselves, to perceive reality "with wonder and admiration", "joy and awe"

Walking down the street after reading 'The Years of Rice and Salt' over dinner, I was seized by the thought of how huge and marvellous the world is: so much to learn and understand about nature, all the peoples, their works. I felt very small as I realised I will never understand even a tiny bit of the world, much less become a future role model for anyone
