Lionel Jospin has passed.
“Former French prime minister Lionel Jospin, a Socialist who introduced the 35-hour work week and civil partnerships for gay couples, has died aged 88, his family said on Monday, February 23. Jospin, who was head of government from 1997 to 2002 before losing to the far right in presidential polls, died on Sunday, they told Agence France-Presse (AFP). (le Monde)
Bidding to succeed his former mentor in 1995, Jospin shocked many Socialists by claiming a “right of inventory” over Mitterrand’s legacy, a right to reassess a record that loyalists deemed sacrosanct. That year, he narrowly lost the presidential election to Chirac.
Two years later, though, Jospin won a revenge of sorts when the cocky Chirac called an early general election, expecting his right-wing RPR party − forerunner of Nicolas Sarkozy’s Les Républicans − to win easily.
The Socialists stole the day, ushering in five years of uneasy “cohabitation” between Chirac as president and Jospin at the helm of government. Jospin, who has two children with his first wife, also remarried that year, to feminist philosopher Sylviane Agacinski.

President Emmanuel Macron praised Jospin on X for his “rigour, his courage and his ideal of progress.” As prime minister, he charted a pragmatic economic course and sought to stamp out corruption, appointing only scandal-free ministers to his team. He brought down unemployment and revived growth, but it was his social reforms that defined his tenure.
Apart from chopping four hours off the working week, he introduced civil unions, laying the ground for a gay marriage bill that was adopted over a decade later, despite mass protests. But Jospin tripped up in his 2002 presidential rematch against Chirac, making a number of gaffes, including a swipe at his opponent’s age that was seen as below the belt.
In the end, he trailed in third place behind Chirac and Le Pen, in one of the biggest political upsets in post-war France.

“I assume full responsibility for this defeat,” an ashen-faced Jospin announced, bowing out of politics to howls of dismay from supporters. He later blamed his demise on the failure of other left-wing factions to support his bid, splitting the vote.”
For some on the left this aspect of his career was also memorable:
Jospin admits Trotskyist past (2021). “Je garde avec des dirigeants trotskistes des liens, qui sont des liens personnels, qui sont des liens d’échange, mais qui relèvent d’une forme de fidélité maintenue à un passé, d’une sorte de quant-à-soi, presque d’un jardin secret, politique celui-là, et non d’une discipline militante[9]. »

“The Gauche Plurielle (French for Plural Left) was a left-wing coalition in France, composed of the Socialist Party (Parti socialiste or PS), the French Communist Party (Parti communiste français or PCF), the Greens, the Left Radical Party (Parti radical de gauche or PRG), and the Citizens’ Movement (Mouvement des citoyens or MDC). Succeeding Alain Juppé‘s conservative government, the Plural Left governed France from 1997 to 2002. It was another case of cohabitation between rival parties at the head of the state and of the government (Jacques Chirac as president and Lionel Jospin as prime minister.”

The Party of European Socialists (PES) expresses its deep sadness at the passing of Lionel Jospin, former Prime Minister of France, and a historic figure of the socialist movement, who died on 23 March at the age of 88.
A central figure of the French Socialist Party, Lionel Jospin dedicated his life to public service and to advancing progressive values in France and across Europe. From his early engagement in politics to his leadership at the highest level of government, his career was marked by a constant commitment to social justice, democracy, and equality.
As Prime Minister between 1997 and 2002, during a period of cohabitation, Jospin led a broad progressive coalition and delivered landmark reforms that helped shape modern France. His government introduced key social measures, reinforcing workers’ rights and strengthening social protection.
Under his leadership, France also made significant progress on equality and social inclusion, with policies reflecting a clear vision of a fairer and more cohesive society. His tenure remains one of the most significant periods of progressive governance in recent French history.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
“Beyond his time in office, Lionel Jospin remained a respected and influential voice in public debate, consistently defending multilateralism, European cooperation, and democratic values. At a time of growing uncertainty, his clarity and commitment continue to inspire those who believe in a stronger and more united Europe. His contribution to France and to the wider progressive movement in Europe will not be forgotten.”
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:
“Lionel Jospin was a pillar of European social democracy. Throughout his life, he stood firmly for justice, equality, and public service, leaving a lasting mark on France and on progressive politics across Europe. At a time when our values are challenged, his legacy reminds us of the importance of unity and responsibility. We honour his memory and extend our deepest condolences to his family and to our comrades in the French Socialist Party.”
Lionel Jospin’s legacy is that of a principled leader who believed in politics as a tool to improve people’s lives and whose contribution to social democracy in Europe will endure.

In 1981 Jospin was elected député in la 27e circonscription de Paris (quartiers de la Chapelle – Goutte-d’Or). Living just by I saw him make an impressive speech there, at a PS public meeting, a few years later.
