  1. While testing around with SteamOS off the Live Installer (on a decade old standard size SD card and similarly "ancient" USB adapter) was fun and all, and quite snappy despite the media used.. You can definitely tell it's not ready for Prime Time in the "Gaming PC" space, yet. Very much built for bespoke devices like handhelds and the new Machine/micro PCs like that.

Hence, I fresh installed a clean image of Garuda, my OS of choice the last 3 years. (I also run Mint on a 2nd PC for multi-user reasons and my laptop that isn't that old but I prefer to use lighter spins for such devices) The SteamOS testing had cemented the idea that my OG Garuda install from about 2 years ago had gotten conflicted or corrupted, and while I may have been able to "fix" it, it's just easier to fresh install. Plus It allowed me to move from the 500GB SATA SSD to a 1TB M.2. Don't need that much space for a boot, but the speed upgrade is nice, and it was already in my PC. Buying a 500GB M.2 today likely costs double what the TB cost me 2 years ago. Stupid "AI".

As usual the fresh install has been pretty painless and smooth. I did hit an odd snag (to me) with Lutris this morning. I was trying to install Lord of the Rings Online, the DXVK+Esync script. The install finished in like 10 seconds and there wasn't any popups from the installer so I knew something was up. Click Launch and it tossed an error about no executable. Opened the folder and yeah not only is there no .exe, there's nothing in the new Wine prefix but a Lutris .json and . reg file.

Ok let's try again. Same results. Well, try the normal script? System freeze?? WTF? Hard reset. Ok, check Lutris settings. Discovered that for some reason, it was defaulting to using Proton to install Wine programs. Wine is on this install already so.. not sure what that was about. Set it to Wine, and now the install proceeds as it should.

Just another day with a Linux OS, lol.

  3. The Station (Multi, XP'd on PC) Something has gone wrong on the Espial, a cloaked space station overlooking an inhabited planet. It's your job to figure out what the problem is and where the crew went before it's too late.
Recently acquired this 8 year old game for $1.50 in the summer Steam sale. This is a very short (2.5 hours to roll credits) walking sim puzzle game. Despite that short play time, it's got all the things you'd expect: locked doors, ID cards (bracelets, same diff), audio logs and text files, things to repair, etc.
The story is quite good, if not super deep. The voice acting is more than acceptable, it is flat here and there but also has plenty of emotional depth. The station is well realized esp for an older Unity game.
Controls.. this is where things got a bit wonky. It has controller support which is my preferred way to play most games(carpal is a bitch yo). However I ended up having to resort to Steam Input and remapping the controller and it still wasn't great. Last half of the game I gave up and went WASD.
I also noticed that my CPU was pushing hard, messed with the settings and turning on Vsync "fixed" it, or at least brought it down to a more reasonable level for what I would have thought was a "lighter" game, shrug.
Being that it is so short, it's kind of a bummer than the "twist" ending was telegraphed pretty early on, at least I saw through it fairly early. Despite that it was an enjoyable experience getting to that ending.
Overall I'd certainly recommend playing this, but given it's so short I would also suggest picking it up now or another Steam sale as the $15 reg price does feel a tad steep for a nearly decade old 3 hour long game, imo.

  7. I swear, ever since I updated to the 9070XT, LotRO occasionally gets confused that it's running so fast on Ultra settings that it glitches out. I'll be running along and suddenly the terrain objects (bushes, stumps, grass clumps etc) will blink out and then a second later fade back in. I also get an inch wide band of "static" in the horizontal center of the screen that lasts for like a quarter of a second when I turn around. I spose I could try troubleshooting it, mess with the Wine settings or the games GFX settings but honestly it doesn't really bother me enough. Only happens once or twice a session (most of which are min 2 hours long).

I just imagine the game going "WAIT HOW AM I RUNNING AT 120FPS ON ULTRA SETTINGS!? *blink* OK I GUESS, STILL FEELS WRONG"

Kinda curious what it'll do when I get the 9800X3D installed soon, lol.

  9. I have figured out what the problem with The Last Caretaker is. It's "Global Illumination". When I set it to Low, my CPU settles down to a still kinda balmy 82C. Bit high imo, but ok. (Yeah I know AMD chips are "designed to run hot" I just don't like seeing 8 on the front of the temp, just a me thing)

However.. the frame rate drops from around 75ish to fucking TWENTY, TWO ZERO. With dips into the TEENS. TF. If I try to FSR it back to playable, the CPU BBQ kicks back in and it's pushing 90C. So I cannot fix it.

Went to the game's Steam Discussion page and searched for "Global Illumination". Heartening to see 5 pages of posts pop up. So it's not just me. Less heartening is the fact there are zero Dev responses.

I really wanna like and recommend this game.. but I just can't when there's an issue like this that isn't even garnering a response. I do like the premise and the mechanics etc. Just wish the Devs would learn how to "optimize" Unreal Engine 5.

Stupid game prob the sole reason my thermal paste got pumped out and dried, forcing me to buy new paste, then a (soon to arrive) new heatsink, even contemplate buying a new CPU, lol. Damn but Unreal 5 sucks.

  11. Arctic Awakening
(Multi, XP'd on PC via Steam)
Marooned in the Alaskan wilds with a court appointed "therapy bot" Kai is confronted with mysterious facilities and his past as he struggles to survive and be rescued.
This 5 part episodic walking sim/adventure game has some serious Firewatch vibes. Not entirely shocking as it's a Unity FPS perspective game which they tend to look similar. I dig this lower poly "cartoon like" art style tho. Better than "hi res Unreal jank" any day IMO.
There's a bunch of interesting introspective type conversations happening in the game. Also not surprising given the nature of the main story. Kai is an "absent" father of 2 kids, which is why he's had a court appoint the "therapy bot". I also find it interesting that the game starts out with the usual Telltale "People will remember your choices" but unlike Telltale games, you don't get notifications like "<Name> will remember that".
The gameplay is pretty solid, most of the time. There were a couple times where progression felt a little tedious as I could see where things were headed but there wasn't a way to get there any faster. I do like that there's a few places where they actually "cut" a scene to prevent it from becoming tedious, as there's times you're tasked to "physically" do something that would be a pain to complete, so they cut it after you do enough to "get the idea across".
Technically speaking this was a relatively painless experience on my Linux PC. Had no crashes or other software related oddness. Did have one "bug" where at the start of a scene I was tasked with placing some rocks, the log said "anywhere" but there's a specific place it's supposed to happen and that "physical prompt" failed to initiate, requiring a scene restart. Other than that, smooth sailing thru the 9.6hr playtime.
If you like walking sims, FP adventure games, Firewatch etc, I would definitely suggest checking this one out. 👍 👍

  13. I’ve got my PC almost fully set up, going to have to invest into some fans for my case in the future but other than that it’s pretty smooth sailing.

I’ve got some goals to work on stuff, first of all the Minecraft UK City Mod is an ongoing project for our next major release of the mod.

Secondly I’ve been trying to build a full overhaul of my vex.blue, the current goal is to massively work on getting the site full of all the information that is currently only on the live site as well as what has been needing to release on it for so long.

I feel I need to update all the information on here more often, so hopefully will do mini updates more often.

  14. @samuelsantaella @itsfoss I agree - that is the only real reason. #YotLD is not about anything technical, nor about market share! The true practical definition of #YotLD is when people can simply walk in to physical stores. and buy affordable laptops with #LinuxPreinstalled.

Remember, most people don't install Windows or macOS on their computers. In fact, they have no concept of an operating system - it's just a computer. They are only concerned with using the apps!

  17. Finally, I am making myself a holidays present and ordering a new (mini) barebone PC tomorrow.
    I think I will go with a #Gigabyte Brix, #AMD Ryzen 7 4800U, 2x8GB RAM #Kingston Fury (3200Mhz) and a #Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB
    Any valuable objections anyone? 🙃
But I think this comes completely handy with the latest #Linuxmint 20.3 release just around the corner 👏

  18. System76 (Linux PC creators) provides funds to Open Source projects!

System76 hopes to push open hardware further than it has ever gone before and continue to inspire the masses to explore open source tools. This will only work if these tools are seen as superior to proprietary ones.

Projects include KiCad, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Free Software Foundation (FSF), and the Open Source Hardware Association (OSHWA).
