A friend brought up an interesting point about how 'installing things on linux is hard', which I agree with.. if you're kinda Windows minded
There's a deep, ancient difference between Windows, Mac and Linux that people rarely seem to name, which also explains why Package Managers exist: DLL Hell. This explains the Windows SideBySide config, and Linux's Package Managers
To explain further, see the posts in the screenshots below (full alt text available):

Getting bored with Ubuntu (and annoyed by Snaps, lol). Which distro should I switch to?
Feel free to suggest something else, though I'm not really interested in going back to something super technical like Gentoo, Slackware, or a BSD variant.
I would prefer something that is user-friendly for everyday use, but customisable. Gaming and programming friendliness also desirable.

Helped someone switch to Kubuntu at our Linux User Group this week. The highlight? Her delight in learning “Kubuntu uses Firefox too!”
It’s a small thing, but it says so much about user expectations. Change feels safe when something familiar remains.
In open source, we talk a lot about freedom and features, but sometimes the real magic is showing that new doesn’t have to mean foreign. 🦊💻

In Norwegen übrigens schon >20% Marktanteil: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/norway#LinuxMarketshare #LinuxStats #Statistiken #Zahlen #Windows10EOL #WindowsEOL #LinuxMigration

Awesome Message!
I join the cause and am willing to help people who need help migrating to Linux.
Edit: as you can guess, I'm mostly using Fedora but can also help with Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS...

Here are links to the two articles I've written about this.
- https://dev.to/geraldew/ubuntu-linux-installation-to-a-usb-external-drive-with-efi-boot-46pjThey are aimed at the "tech capable friend" rather than directly to the end-user. Ideally I'd like some popular YouTube video makers to cover this method.
In a fantasy where I've won Lotto, I'd set up a service of providing these to people - ideally as a place people could drop-by with their laptop and watch one be made for them, and be shown how to boot on it.
-
A note that if you want to help people move to using Linux, one *option* is to build them an independently running USB SSD.
I've documented a good method for doing this, which has two distinctions:
- it allows them to not modify their existing computer at all;
- it will be their *long term* portable Linux, that can be used with (most) other computers. The one big caveat:
- for each run-time host computer, they will need to find out how to have it boot from USB. -
Who says old tech can't keep up? My #ThinkPadX250 is getting a serious power-up in 2025 with a full install of #Netrunner25 "Shockworm"! You won't believe how snappy it is.
Want to revive your old laptop? This video's for you! Head to the link in my bio to watch the full tutorial. Thirty years of using Linux and not turning back!
In 1995 I started my Linux journey with SUSE. I had an old Compaq SFF and Windows 95 crawled. There was a Linux magazine with a CD and decided to give it a try and was amazed at the difference is performance.
I did a backup of my files to a CD and installed it. Faster, no crashes and it just worked. It was a bit of a learning curve using the package manager and where all of the tools were.
Over the years I moved from SUSE to MANDRIVA to PCLINUX to ANTIX and now MX-Linux. About fifteen years ago my wife wanted to migrate and we went through the migration. She absolutely loves it as it just works and has never crashed on her. I set it up to be as much in look-and-feel to her Windows95 setup. I love it as she doesn't call 1-800-tom-help very often. Most of the times it is asking where a specific tool is and only once!
Over the decades we purchased only used machines. They worked and much more inexpensive than the latest and greatest shiny computers. Only two machines were new. One was from my prior work, they gave me a bonus and I broke down and bought a tower. The other was a gaming laptop. I do play some games, but I was doing a lot of photo editing of family documents along with a few family videos and needed a machine with enough to handle that.
The gaming laptop is now on the list to convert to Linux as MS is stopping support for Windows 10. The only thing from stopping me earlier was the tax software was windows only. They now have a web version so that limitation is now gone!
If you are thinking about migration to Linux check out DistroWatch as they have a great list of distros and you can search for what you are interested in. Create a bootable USB stick and give it a try before migrating.

I'm running Windows 10. Saturday night / Sunday morning, I installed an update and restarted. Monday, I noticed that opening Office documents (Word in particular; I have not tried with Excel or PowerPoint) was taking longer than usual. Suspicious, I opened Task Manager and Resource Monitor, and I saw that WINWORD.EXE communicates with deploy.static.akamaitechnologies.com and various IP addresses like 52.96.164.82, 52.111.246.15, and 52.123.248.29 (and maybe others).
In total, when opening a .docx file locally (I do not use OneDrive and I have its nag screens turned off), about a dozen exchanges happen over 5 to 10 seconds while Word is launching, before the document shows up on my screen. If I am re-opening a document that I recently closed, it does not take as long, and there seem to be fewer TCP/IP exchanges marked WINWORD.EXE.
I am using the desktop version of Word, which I notice is now calling itself Microssoft 365. If I disconnect from wi-fi and Ethernet, I still can open and edit .docx files.
I don't know if this started with the recent update, or if only just now got bad enough for me to notice.
My suspicion is that Microsoft is scanning for virus, which I guess is good? I don't remember agreeing to that, but I suppose it's buried somewhere in their license agreement.
But I further suspect that they are also using my docs to train their AI; and I don't agree to that. I'd like to migrate to LibreOffice, but I have to exchange files with people who are locked into using Microsoft Office; and the minor formatting differences (particularly w/r/t pagination) get in the way. I've heard that using Linux, I can run MS Office in a VM, so I guess I'll be learning how to do that.

Got the wheel (Logitech G923) working flawlessly with Euro Trucks Simulator 2, while I need a bit of work for tuning Force Feedback on EA WRC.
Now, the only thing for which I still need to use Windows is Da Vinci Resolve. Sadly, the codec h264 and h265, free on Windows are paywalled on the Linux version. I might check out some other video editors tho.

@Geekmaster I couldn't agree more! I just felt like adding that over the past few years, #gamingonlinux has come a long way and now I've been finally able to complete my #linuxmigration! Long time user but games had me still living on Windows. I feel Linux on the #desktop is primed and ready for full time adoption.

If you're on #Windows for anything other than work or PC gaming, you need to start #ChangingYourPerspective. #Linux has always been a solid alternative, specifically in the past 15 years. Yes, in its earliest days it was a niche OS that required someone technically savvy. Today you can make Linux function/look exactly as you want it to - and it's a #MoreSecure #OpenSource platform that is truly universal. There are now literally millions of #developers to support it, plus #ITPros and #hackers that use it daily! If you're on an #Andoird or #ChromeOS device - YOU'RE ON LINUX!! :linux: Time to make the move! If you have an old computer, you can revive it by installing #Linux! #Distros I personally like: #Ubuntu and #PopOS are VERY #UserFriendly. #ArchLinux is great. If you're more security minded, #KaliLinux is your boy. #RedHat will always have a special place in my heart AND is a solid alternative for the enterprise because they had professional support services available. Get to it! #TuxRules #LinuxMigration
