Huh, apparently there is some discourse around the Flatpak 2.0, as they were talking about the potential of a systemd-appd dependency...Bear in mind, this is all up in the air at the moment, nothing has really been decided yet. Not a single line of code has yet to be written, for the time being everything is being discussed. The developers discussed the idea at the Linux App Summit of 2026. There would be methods for the format to support distros that don't use systemd like Void Linux, Alpine for example.
However, in standard fashion the conversation has gone kinda sour online...I hope that heated exchanges do not end up leading to Flatpak being harder to make compatible to systemd free distros. As spite has made developers veer in directions they haven't intended before...
The article has plenty of links to the online conversations happening on Mastodon, it wasn't pretty and honestly unhinged. I'm currently reading through some of these conversations now. :brdFinch:

But also kinda cursed for my ADHD because it covered so many topics of interest —the VM stuff that's actually my job, and peer-to-peer local-first apps, and image-based OS— and I want to already work on allll that but in the end I don't have the executive function to do anything lol

this was a delightful closer to #linuxappsummit and i'll place bets that this is a talk the kids revisit in 10 years with a bit of nostalgia when all that was foretold comes true.
