  1. So I thought I was tripping balls when someone pointed this out to me earlier, but for some reason you can still go on Walmart’s website in 2025 and find Lindows 4.0 listed for sale. Like… the old Linux distro from 2003 that got sued by Microsoft for the name.

I didn’t believe it at first, so I looked it up myself and sure enough, there it was: the full suite, add-ons like “SurfSafe” and “VirusSafe” and even the Office pack.

That shouldn’t even be possible though as they should’ve been rebranded because of legal reasons.

It’s surreal seeing something from the dot-com era just chilling alongside modern listings. Makes me wonder if it’s really in stock or just a relic frozen in their system for two decades

  2. @hkrn OMG I remember having to deal with Lindows for an Eee PC I won at a tech conference.
The nice thing was that the stock configuration had Wacom support so I used it as a demo PC to run Inkscape at our booths at other conferences.

  3. @ActionRetro I was working as a desktop support technician for a majorish university in the Lindows days and they spent a lot of time trying to create "PantherLinux" as a fork of #Lindows / #Linspire, thinking that Windows XP costs so much that maybe Linspire on 10% of the machines could save a bit of money.

  4. Linspire (formerly Lindows) is back on the Linux map.

A labor of love or a pure business investment?

Linspire is a commercial, non-enterprise Linux distro filled with proprietary elements, so it sure isn't a right out embraced offering in Linux community.

    PC/OpenSystems LLC bought the rights.

As a commercial product, a purchase of a yearly license to get updates / access to CNR ("Click 'n Run).
