So, originally "based" meant you smoked ("freebased" smokable) crack, then it meant you were weird like someone who smoked crack, then it meant you weren't afraid to be called weird because you were unapologetic and you had that swagger, then it meant you were unapologetic about being alt-right, and then it meant you're an asshole who's drunk that alt-ride koolaid. Linguistic relativity--the idea that language influences thought--has inspired hearty debate. It's clear that the language you speak does not determine thought, or prevent you from thinking certain thoughts. (That version of the theory has been debunked and can get racist fast.) However it's also clear that language plays an enormous role in culture, which does shape how we think about things. Now to the news:

Hi to fellow #linguistodons ! A brief #introduction. My name's Robin, I'm a teacher, translator and linguist, currently studying for an MA in Corpus Linguistics. My first degree was also in #linguistics, but that was a lo-o-o-o-o-ng time ago.
