  1. And this is why we need continued and concerted efforts to push for linguistic diversity and technology stacks supporting all human writing systems and languages: Kim Hyeon delivering the keynote for #DH2026 in Korea refers to classical Chinese concepts, but the Chinese signs are not to be found for proper display on the slides!

  2. El Cid (1961) isn’t just a medieval epic—it’s a Cold War fantasy soaked in jingoism, linguistic imperialism, and toxic masculinity. Charlton Heston’s ‘hero’ crushes female agency while the film’s polished spectacle buries its hollow story.

  3. @Textplus lese ich das richtig, dass sämtliche Entitäten nur in lateinischer Schrift und nicht in Devanagari erfasst und in Englisch beschrieben werden? Gibt es hierzu eine dokumentierte Begründung?

  4. What do you do when the usually pliant Supreme Court suspends the use of a colonial-era sedition law that has seen a 160% increase in 2016 - 2019 [1] and beyond to stifle any public discourse critical of the government, its ministers, increased religiosity and failure to address critical issues like climate change and unemployment, throwing mainly young people in jail without trial, knowing that the judicial system is severely backlogged and it might take years/decades before the case is heard? #TheProcessIsThePunishment

If you're the Indian government, you just revoke the law which criminalised sedition, and introduce a new criminal law (with a name in Hindi, which is illegal as per the Constitution [2]) that, among other shenanigans, not only brings back sedition as a crime in all but name, but also expands its scope to include vague and undefined terms like “excites or attempts to excite secession or subversive activities", “encourages feelings of separatist activities", and "endangers the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India" [3]

Welcome to the mother of democracy, as Dear Leader calls it. This law goes into effect 1 Jul 2024.

  5. He lived in a different country in the 16th & 17th Cs & wrote in Early Modern English -increasingly irrelevant & alien to kids. He was hostile to Ireland, but it is compulsory for every Irish child to study his work.

    This is unquestionable.

Meanwhile, some argue that the native language of Ireland - that connects us to the land, the placenames, the history and native culture - should be an optional subject, or even removed altogether.

    Welcome to postcolonial Ireland.

  6. Noticing v. anecdotally - in #academia - how quickly 'n often monoligual speakers of English in my #UK context go on the defensive (in their tone of voice - a mix of sarcasm/affront) when presented with non-English sources and references: eg. 'would be nice to have an English plug-in for that!' or 'not all of us are multilingual' and 'I don't feel this is a very inclusive space'.

  7. "English-language researchers are not obliged to add qualifiers [...] indicating their findings apply only to English, but the same standard is not applied to researchers of other languages who are told to demarcate their findings as applicable only to a specific language and context. There is an implicit assumption that findings from English are generalizable [...], but studies from other languages are not. This should be a matter of critical reflection..."
