  13. I’m reading about blue-rayed limpets from Europe after seeing this terrific photo by Pfuetzi in my #Flickr feed. The internet has told me a lot about how they’re blue (“mineralized hierarchical photonic architecture”!) but not yet why they’re blue. Anyone know why they need these crazy blue stripes?

  18. Normally I only see iridescence/nacre on limpet shells when I flip them over and look inside. These individuals live in an exposed spot and the outside of their shells have worn down to the point where you can see the blueish sheen showing through.

  20. A pair of Limpet shells in pic1 that have been predated on by Dog whelks (Nucella lapillus) like the one in pic2. Dog whelks are carnivorous marine snails that drill holes in the shells of other species then inject them with digestive enzymes and suck the resulting "soup" up with their proboscis. 🐌😋

  28. I am very fond of limpets. They clamp onto rocks while the tide is out. Then, when the tide comes in, they spring into action and go off looking for algae, which they scrape off rocks with their tongue. When the tide goes back out, they return to their own favourite spot. Over time, the spot becomes worn by the limpet's shell, creating a 'home scar', which helps them to cling on when the tide goes out. How amazing is that!
