Deep-sea #snails ride surface currents to reach distant #hydrothermalvents
Traces of the epic sea journey are written in their #shells
Chemical traces on the shells of three #limpet species endemic to these extreme seafloor environments suggest that the animals spent their youth feeding on sun-loving phytoplankton. Eventually, the larvae of these flattened snails returned to the depths to turn into their adult forms and colonize new habitats.

💁🏻♀️ TIL: Asa Barber’s team at the University of #Portsmouth found that common #limpet #teeth are five times stronger than #spider #silk, making them the strongest known natural material.
Their goethite nanofiber #protein composite can withstand pressures comparable to turning #carbon into #diamond and could inspire synthetic materials.

I’m reading about blue-rayed limpets from Europe after seeing this terrific photo by Pfuetzi in my #Flickr feed. The internet has told me a lot about how they’re blue (“mineralized hierarchical photonic architecture”!) but not yet why they’re blue. Anyone know why they need these crazy blue stripes?

Baby snail? Baby limpet!!?

A small community of Common Limpets (Patella vulgata) have selected this particular rock as their resting spot during lowtide. Once the tide returns they'll head off looking for food.

A selection of Limpet feeding trails. When the tide comes in Limpets beging feeding by scraping freshly grown algae off the rocks. They use a radula (a rasp-like tongue) which has up to a hundred tiny teeth made from one of the strongest natural substances we know of.

Normally I only see iridescence/nacre on limpet shells when I flip them over and look inside. These individuals live in an exposed spot and the outside of their shells have worn down to the point where you can see the blueish sheen showing through.

Limpet feeding tracks - left behind as they scrape algae from the rock surface using their radulae. A limpet radula is a rasp like organ containing over 100 rows of teeth.

A pair of Limpet shells in pic1 that have been predated on by Dog whelks (Nucella lapillus) like the one in pic2. Dog whelks are carnivorous marine snails that drill holes in the shells of other species then inject them with digestive enzymes and suck the resulting "soup" up with their proboscis. 🐌😋

A group of Limpets a Beadlet Anemone a couple of Periwinkles and some Topshells all crowded together in this wee corner to shelter from the recent stormy weather. Once the sea settles down a bit they'll all move out to look for food.

The inside of Common Limpet (Patella vulgata) shells often have an iridescence that is hard to capture on camera - but because this shell has been worn down a bit it's shining through much more strongly 😍 County Clare, Ireland.
