  1. @benroyce @TeflonTrout

Oh, international ownership of power companies is another great topic. 😅

See, one of the Big 4 is actually the Swedish 100% state company Vattenfall, who took over the power plants in Eastern Germany after the wall came down.

Up until 2016, they owned and operated huge lignite mining sites and the corresponding power plants. (#Lausitz)

Adds some salt to the "foreigners lecturing Germans on coal" posts. 😜

  2. September 10th.

Recently I was out with my gravel bike in the Lusatian Lakeland (“Lausitzer Seenland”) and also made a detour to the Welzow-Süd lignite opencast mine. Here it was possible to take a shot of one of the two large bucket chain excavators (Es 3750) directly from above.

Both excavators remove the overburden above the lignite. The removed material is then used with a conveyor bridge (F60) behind the exploited layer of lignite to backfill the mining pit.

  3. 1/ How German #electricity generation, consumption and imports changed 2024 vs. 2023 🇩🇪🔌

    Key takeaways:
▶️ Hard #coal and #lignite declined substantially and are now on a record low.
▶️ #Nuclear power phased out completely in 2024.
▶️ Onshore #wind: not a great wind year, combined with sluggish capacity expansion, led to a slight reduction.
▶️ Offshore wind: moderate capacity increase led to some growth which over-compensated the reduction of onshore wind.

  4. Question to English mother tongue speaker:
    1) Would you call a #lignite digging company a 'coal' producer?
    2) Is digging for lignite in an open pit a #coal mine?

  5. Germany to shut down seven more coal power plant units as country exits winter

The units (combined capacity of 3.1 GW) will finally be shut down at end of March, after their decommissioning had been postponed due to the #energycrisis

  7. If #Germany had kept its 2021 #nuclear capacity, it would have been able to shut down all its #=coal-fired power stations and part of its #gas-fired ones. With the nuclear capacity of 2017, #lignite (which is even dirtier than coal) could have been eliminated.

  8. This one bears watching. One huge #coal plant plus an enormous #lignite mine needs to be replaced by many pieces that need to fall in place together to provide the necessary jobs, all while the AfD is spreading misinformation to the already skittish local residents.
I hope they pull it off.

The re-training / generous retirement offers help but the jobs need to materialise.

  9. I know some of you followed my single little post about the climate crisis recently.

All of them are forming a full storyline.

  13. Laugh at this video, but then think about what it means.

The place is just a thin layer of grass over that #coal. Where there is no grass, you step on coal. Self-respecting coalmines look like Mordor because they have anthracite. #Lützerath just has #lignite: "brown" coal that's high in sulphur, low in heat content, and high in water (up to 70% !). As a fuel, it sucks.

This is what Germany says will save it from Putin?

Also the water in it helps it turn to mud.

  14. CW: Germany, politics, nuclear power

People upset by that German #lignite strip mine: this is what happens when your country decides to switch off the #NuclearPower stations providing 25% of the nation's electricity.

  15. #World2: Special: Coal

I had to change my publishing schedule a bit for a pressing topic: Coal! Coal is currently the dirtiest of all energy sources. Therefore it's obvious that so many people fight against sacrificing whole villages like Lützerath for lignite open-cast mining. ...

😅 OK, #OpenStreetMap is not always perfect...
But 2 videos worth watching 😃

Someone was mistaken about the village that is being destroyed... 🤡
Just imagine #lignite was in the ground all over there & #Garzweiler open coal mine would spread as far as to Mosel ...! 😮

  17. @Meyerweb The scale of the destruction is hard to grasp. Arte did a short video last year. Starting at the 2:18 mark, you can see in the background the #lignite power plants that are burning all this extracted carbon and putting it directly into the atmosphere.

  18. Action at the main headquarters of RWE in Essen. Activisti have chained themselves to the gate with locks, another 30 block the road.

    They demand:
    📣 Immediate stop of #Eviction of #Luetzerath.
    📣 Moratorium on #Luetzerathbleibt
📣 The #lignite remains in the ground

  19. A personal anecdote.

Years years years ago I studied #geography in Utrecht and we had an excursion in the area around #Lützerath and #Hambi, watching the open #lignite mines. It was probably the first time in my life that I stood face to face with the destructible force called humanity!

I never understood that after all those years, the German state never had the decency to stop this monster. And than I'm not even talking about the #pollution and #climate impact. Because in the nineties we already knew about this. All politicians and all businessman should be held responsible for this! Incl. the ecological traitors called #DieGrunen!

The activists in #Lützerath are the true heroes of our time! Maximum #solidarity for you! :solidarity:

  20. #GermanEnergyFact #6 is even more dirty than the last one: #lignite

Here is most recent #AGEB data on lignite for 2022: ag-energiebilanzen.de/wp-conte

    ▶️ Primary #energy consumption of lignite in 🇩🇪 increased by 5% in 2022 vs. 2021. #wrongtrend
▶️ The overall consumption in 2022 was 329 TWh. That is nearly 4000 kWh per capita #thatsalot!
▶️ Around 90% of this was used for #electricity generation, which was also up by around 5% vs. 2021, driven by exploding electricity prices

  21. '#Burn Everything': #Poland #Chokes on the #Smog of #War

While a number of #European #countries besides Poland, such as #Germany and #Hungary, are burning more #polluting brown #coal, or #lignite, to keep the lights on, #experts say it's the use of the #fuel at home that will have the biggest #impact on #health.
