I feel my life is almost always hampered by language. It feels that about 25% of the time I want to show something to someone they either don't speak the language of the thing in question or their knowledge of the "dialect" (e.g. legalese) is too insufficient to understand the thing I want to show them.
As a minor example, today I had one conversation about idioms with a relative who is fluent in English and I learnt that "to mistake the forest for the trees" and "horses for courses" aren't as common knowledge as I had expected and we couldn't think of any equivalents in Portuguese for those idioms.
They were however surprised that "não se olha nos dentes de cavalo dado" can be almost literally translated as "you don't look at the teeth of a gifted horse".
