Birding opportunities are currently thin on the frozen snow and sleet ground, so @CTGT and I were quite excited to add this Lapland Larkspur to our lifer list last weekend. This non-breeding adult was hanging out with a Horned Lark that had a broken beak and a Dark-eyed Junco.

A year after coming oh-so-close to finally seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow, I finally clapped eyes and bins on one. Last November one was repeatedly sighted at a nearby location so @CTGT and I headed out to find this rare-in-our-area small sparrow. After four hours with no success, I had to leave to attend a workshop. My husband and a friend stayed to continue the search and, of course, found it. One returned to our neck of the woods about two weeks ago and after three visits, I was finally rewarded with adding this skulky little creature to my lifer list.

To escape the wind and dangerous surf at the beach from Erin, @CTGT and I spent the morning of our first full day of vacation searching for a Red-cockaded Woodpecker. After almost two hours, when we were convinced this wasn’t our day to find it, success! A territorial, non-migratory bird species that lives in mature pine forests in the southeastern United States, it was listed as endangered in 1973. Successful conservation efforts have resulted in a downgrade of its status to threatened.

Today I saw bushtits, a #lifer for me. They were roiling like honeybees, like large gray insects. It was more of a swarm than a flock. Staying on brand, they were on a bush. #birding
(a lot of the bird pics I post are pretty crappy, but considering the severity of my tremor and the movement of the birds, it's astonishing that the Google-Pixel-Tensor-AI nonsense can get a photo at all)

Breakfast table #birding was crazy this morning! Word is out about our feeder full of squirrel-repellent habanero sunflower seed. Red-breasted nuthatches and black-capped chickadees fought for supremacy. American goldfinches poked around trying to find an opening (the first time my son saw these). All of this was too fast to trigger the #BirdBuddy
And a rufous hummingbird buzzed by, a #lifer for both of us!
