Now that's what I call microtonal multitasking. Reading over my grant application while waiting for Angine De Poitrine to come on stage #Excited #LifeOfPI #Microtonal #PsychFest #EdinburghPsychFest

  2. On to the second peer review task of the day. Then I need to review two more (internal things) today…

Have there been any studies on whether repeated peer reviewing makes one more or less critical/cynical/psychotic??

  3. For all my tough talk about reviewing less and saying no… I find myself with two paper and two grant reviews to do and the deadlines are looming.

  4. Today's fun challenge has been to figure out a way to remove/recover data from a locked-down laptop that has no internet connection, and where the ability to plug in a USB drive is blocked.

  5. Bwah! Reviewer doesn't like my cheeky Stevie Wonder-referencing title of my Perspective article. I suppose the name of the game is to sneak these things in undetected… and I just lost.

Ah well, it was not in the same league as @CellySally's “You should always keep in touch with your friends”

  6. Grrr...
I asked last week if there were different forms for the grant that I submitted this morning.

I was told there were NO different forms last week.

    Friends, there were different forms.

    Thankfully, easy to change.

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

    Admire cinematography only

  8. Another day messing around with GPUs, conda, python this-and-that. Segment Anything indeed... Say what you like about Otsu, at least it will work out of the box on the crappest computer on the planet.

  9. Just helped someone in my lab with a coding problem. Ended up writing the commands out by hand on a piece of paper. I feel like some kind of yesteryear LLM.

  10. Email from a colleague to a large distribution list, signing off with “Enjoy the long weekend and the sun!”.

Effectively ensuring thunderstorms via sod's law.

  11. I just made myself a Post It holder for my desk and am feeling pretty pleased with myself

(I feel sure I must have stolen this idea from someone at some point... if anyone knows who please let me know so that I can credit them)

  12. Q&A after seminar.

    Q: *mentions relevant paper*
A: thanks! I will check it out.
Q: it was published in Nature.
A: well, it might still be true.

    It made me laugh anyway.

  13. Writing is thinking.

    But also…

    Making figures is thinking.

At least it helps me to write by clarifying what we're trying to say and then go back to writing.

  14. Predatory conference madness in my Junk folder just now.

  15. Great start to the day. Semantic Scholar alert tells me about an interesting preprint that has cited one of our papers. I click through and find that not only is it an appropriate citation (not always the case), but the authors really understood a deep point in our paper which I wasn’t sure we'd managed to convey.

  16. Remembered a conversation with a long-in-the-tooth academic 10 years ago.

He said “things are bad, so bad. I've never known a situation like this in all my career.” Hilarious really given that, back then, grant success rates were better, we were still in the EU, the madness of world events & COVID was yet to happen.

I suppose with continual decline, it will always feel at (that point in time) like things are the worst its ever been.

  17. I love it when somebody in the lab proves me wrong with experimental data.

  18. The tragedy of writing a reference letter and submitting it only to realise this task was not on my todo list.

It's going on there and then it shall be crossed off!

I will very responsibly share more details when the embargo is lifted.

  20. Supplementary Data. A general rule.

The amount of formatting in an Excel spreadsheet negatively correlates with the usefulness of enclosed data.

  21. Having your paper rejected yet very much appreciating the reviewer's comments... is that a form of Stockholm Syndrome? Asking for a friend.
