Ruth_Mottram - It's summer holiday time and we're back on the train, this time in 5 changes from Copenhagen to Amsterdam via Hamburg - so far (🤞) mostly on time. I'm astonished too. So let's try not to curse it.

I had planned board games, reading books, having a picnic and photo sorting for this trip. But work is unfinished and since leaving at 6am I've managed to finish two reports, clear some emails and now it's time to look at budgets.

Annoying to work on holiday but everyone else is on a screen too and at least this way I can catch up.

While stuck in Ilulissat I have tried to deal with the email backlog (again). But they come in way faster than I can deal with them.
I love the idea of inbox 0 but would literally achieve nothing else if I practiced it, and work would be very boring.

Anyone have suggestions for good systems that work for overwhelming numbers of emails?

I receive around 50-60 a day, at least half of them need me to do something, often something substantial so they're not just for info. #LifeOfAScientist #Emails #EmailEttiquette

My 30 Day Map challenge didn't really survive beyond the first week - too much overwhelm in the day job, but that's ok, I hadn't really expected it to. But the first half of this week is the culmination of #AcWriMo's efforts to pay myself first - the #PRECISE writing week (3 days actually) intended to finalise some papers.

TFW: I got on this train with 2018 emails in my inbox, intending to clear them out in the course of a 5 hour return trip. 2 horus later I have dealt with loads of them, but now have 2019 emails in my inbox....

And on to the 6th meeting of the day, on the 6 th different topic. Only 2 more to go. Also on two different topics.

Having multiple projects is a necessary part of research life, but it doesn't always make it easier.

Today's 4.5 hour #TrainToIUGG meant I processed about half of the 2600 emails in my work inbox (excludes spam + list emails!). I should be able to deal with the rest tomorrow am.

But the oldest emails I had in there were only from mid-April, implying my unprocessed backlog alone is about 260 emails a week. (I probably delete about the same number each week as I go).

How are we supposed to get any work done when answering emails is basically a full-time job?

PSA: Never leave your new tablet and stylus out in the open while editing a scientific paper on overleaf.

Especially not if there are curious 10 year olds in the vicinity who like to "paint" and are desparate to try it out with a stylus on a tablet.

Sincerely, - a scientist who has lots a couple of hours of edits...
