David Hockney said: "A lot of people don't look very hard." However, last night a lot of people - 19! - turned up for our life drawing session in #Eynsham, #Oxfordshire That's a lot of people looking very hard - and the most we have ever had at one session! 😮
The next session, and last one before the summer break, is Wednesday 1 July at 7pm (arrive at 6.45pm to settle in).

We had an outstanding new model for our #lifedrawing session last night, Ruby. Graceful and full of character - and totally inspirational to draw!

I wasn’t feeling particularly inspired or well for last night’s #lifedrawing session, but I went anyway and joined 12 other #artists, pencils poised, ready to tackle the unclothed human form.
It’s not just the model who is exposed when life drawing. It literally exposes the naked truth about an artist’s abilities. There’s nowhere to hide!
The excruciating doubt I sometimes feel as an artist is lifted when I’m life drawing - I prove to myself that I can do it. And at times not too badly. Plus, it’s immense fun!
I hope you enjoy watching the artists in action. It always feels like a kind of miracle...

Our #LifeDrawing sessions are popular! We had SIX new artists turn up to have a go last night. One of them said "it's tricky, isn't it?" Yes! And that's the challenge - to get a single line 'right' and drawn with expression is what we all strive for and only rarely achieve.

For yesterday evening's life drawing class, my brother Paul and I drew Archie - a really splendid model - whose form and poses produced the most engaging and exciting lines. I was trying (and sometimes even succeeding!) to find the initial line in one continuous stroke.
Some parts of the drawing have been deliberated blurred so as not to offend any sensitive alg0r1thms.

I had another fabulous evening #lifedrawing at Mill Street Arts, in Eynsham with my brother Paul, and our model Naomi. She is such an expressive subject. I love to draw her!
We had one slightly longer pose than usual (30 mins) which allowed me time to think harder about tone and volume, not just getting the lines right(ish).

February was #figuary, when #croquiscafe posted a new video every day, and I've drawn along the entire month!
This was day 3 with Heff, and I really liked how she posed on a stool which stayed in place during the session, so I wondered how "illustrated double exposure" might work with the movement here, and liked it.

Here's what me and my brother Paul managed at our #lifedrawing session last night, with our model Anthony.
For the longer 20 minute poses, I used mid-tone paper and water soluble crayons to try to better describe form, rather than just line. I was quite pleased with these.
For one of the shorter 5 minute poses, I ended up with nothing - just a page of rubbings-out. 🤣
No one in the world ever - not even Michelangelo - said "oh, life drawing's easy".

I wanted to try something different. I used a mid-tone paper with white and black water soluble crayons.I'm much happier with a brush than with dry media, and this way allows me to map out the shapes and then go in with a brush to describe some form and tone.

Last fall, I discovered figure drawing online! I really enjoy fast poses, which force me to switch off perfectionism. Sometimes though, I pause the video and let sketches turn into more elaborate drawings...

I recently discovered figure drawing online, and I particularly enjoy very fast poses, which force me to switch off my perfectionism.
Those are the first 1-2 minute sketches I've started with a couple of weeks ago – by no means perfect (or even good), but my happiness is so visible in the lines (to me at least!)!
