This whole situation reeks. Simons, McSweeney et al persecute journalists (one of whom wrote a deeply unflattering book about the whole affair) for reporting on their "questionable" funding arrangements for Labour Together, the machinations of which got Starmer elected. Simons is offered as a sacrificial lamb when it leaks.
Two years later, a candidate who was expressly blocked from standing is handed a byelection by Simons, on the promise of a cushy job in Burnham's putative No.10 operation.
Continuity candidate indeed.
