🐧 🎵 There's a new #LibreMusicChallenge , and this time I made the rules.
To take part, make a piece of music using only sounds recorded using your phone (or other portable device), and no musical instruments are allowed. Since it's the #LMC, you need to use open-source music software.
Deadline is 2 April. Further details are here: https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=24160

Tomorrow is the deadline for the #libremusicchallenge, and I think my #synthwavefromscratch track is in a good enough place for it.
For those of you just joining in, for the past month, I've been making a synthwave track from scratch: no DAW, no plugins. Just C code and some scripting languages on top of that. In other words, I'm using my #sndkit and #gest projects.
The code for the song can be found here:
https://git.sr.ht/~pbatch/gest/tree/master/item/examples/synthwave.lil
...if you don't believe me, compile and render it yourself ;)

More progress with my #synthwavefromscratch track today for the #libremusicchallenge! (I am building a synthwave track without a DAW, using just low-level C code with a small scripting language on top.)
Starting to use my gesture sequencer to work out melodies and make automation curves. Also added some a delay-throw on the melody.
I'm up to a 8-16 bar loop now. Hoping to add a little bit more. Another section perhaps? I need to leave enough time to make sure I can publish all the source code before the deadline!

CW: synthwave from scratch, WIP, lead sounds
Continuations on my Synthwave From Scratch project, where I build a Synthwave track from "scratch" without a DAW, using open source DSP code in C, with some scripting languages on top.
I've added an initial lead sound to my track, but I haven't programmed the melody so it's just a single note. The lead is a particularly distinct feature with the synthwave genre, so it's important to get this one right. Both in timbre and in feel.
It seems the base of this sound is typically a modulated pulse oscillator put through some kind of chorus. I have a really nice sounding bandlimited square wave oscillator that worked quite well, but it goes against the rules of this month's #libremusicchallenge (wavetable synthesis only). So, I went with a wavetable oscillator that uses phase distortion synthesis. It has a similar characteristic.
The way vibrato and pulse modulation behaves in the lead sound is key to getting it to feel right. This also influences the kinds of melodies that work. So actually sequencing will come next.
It also helps to dunk the lead in a very bright very large artificial reverb.

CW: Synthwave from Scratch
Thanks to peer pressure from the internet from an idea I didn't fully think through, I will be making a synthwave track from "scratch". No DAW, using open source DSP aglorithms in C, with some embedded scripting languages on top. I'll be submitting a version of this for the #libremusicchallenge. I'll do a blog series about it after the fact. I will post the rambles here.
So, I wasn't actually sure what "synthwave" was, so I did some listening, found some reference tracks I liked, and started building some initial sounds. Featured here are some initial drum and bass sounds.
Everything is synthesized! More details on the instruments to follow...

I reckon I could make a song for #Fedivision that I can also submit for #LibreMusicChallenge . This month we just have to use Airwindows effects. @unfa , @rghvdberg , want to join in?

Time to do a short stream about Libre Music Challenge!

My open-source audio production community is doing these monthly challenges. This month they've decided to take a 20-minute long live beatboxing session I've done some time ago, and base all tracks around sampling that. Here's the results. I am impressed - they've even made a cover art using frames from my beatboxing livestream!

The #LibreMusicChallenge for December has been decided: make a lullaby for 2-month-old Louise! Any open-source DAW and synths allowed, but the catch is no effects. I'm in.
@unfa @rghvdberg @draco -
I wonder if there is going to be a #LibreMusicChallenge for December. What would the subject be - party music for your New Year's Eve online hangout? Christmas music?
-
I wonder if there will be a #LibreMusicChallenge for November?
-
@oleksiy @looptober I was already considering combining the #LibreMusicChallenge with #NaSoAlMo, so why not make it #noisevember too?
-
I made this #music for this month's #LibreMusicChallenge. Since it's a spooky theme this time, it'd be a shame not to make it available before Hallowe'en. It has horror soundtrack vibes, made with a simulated waterphone and lots of prime numbers.

This month's #LibreMusicChallenge inspires me to listen to music I liked when I was in my 20s.

I guess I'm now officially an old queer goth auntie. Not the worst thing in life :)

worked on something for the #LibreMusicChallenge and boy, is it hard d to write bland, repetitive music! Also, I wonder if my idea will be appropriately elevator-compatible and sonic-wallpaper-y; perhaps a 4-bar chord progression that repeats for all of the song is a little *too* repetitive? Well, I'm just going to go through with it.
I'm having a hard time not making something moody, soundtrack-like instead. Surge and Helm both have so many interesting sounds.

Hey #Music people,
There's another #LibreMusicChallenge going on, in which participants have to use free software to make some music by 30 August. There's a fairly strong suggestion in the rules that it should be a remix this month, so does anybody have something they'd like me to remix? Any style, but it has to be CC-licensed (without "no-derivatives"), and of course it's best if you can provide unmixed audio and/or MIDI files.
