  1. My son was given an angle, side, and side and asked to find the third side of the triangle if it exists (or if it's two solutions, what are they).
so I fired up #librecad, showed him the construction, with a circle at the end of the first side of length equal to the second side, and asked him if it could intersect the third side at the given angle... it immediately became obvious to him that there was no solution, in a way that having his calculator give a complex number for the arcsin didn't

  2. @opensourceguiden Hvis man bare skal skitsere noget i 2D med målsætning, så kan #librecad anbefales. Ellers vil jeg gå med #freecad som Ole foreslår :o)
  3. Busting out #LibreCAD to design a logo for a client. Every time I use it I have to re-learn how. #AutoCAD has trim an extend commands to trim and extend lines. In LibreCAD, they're both trim for some reason.

    I love #FOSS, but sometimes...

  4. Hallelujah! AutoCAD's DWG is a closed format that Linux CAD apps can't properly read. Well, there's apparently now a freeware Linux utility, ODA File Converter, that allows you to convert from DWG to DXF. Get the .appimage from here: opendesign.com/guestfiles/oda_

LibreCAD and other Linux apps I tested can now read these common files fine as DXF! A great solution for my brother too, who I recently converted to Linux too.

  5. I don't understand why #QCad is not very popular in the Linux community. It has a free, GPL version that is way more put together than LibreCAD. In fact, LibreCAD is a fork of QCad from the late 2000s. QCad has way more features now, and most are free.

Sure, there's FreeCAD too, but that's more about 3D CAD, and it's more difficult to learn & use. QCad is a good starter 2D Cad/Cam, especially if you're coming from #AutoCAD 's UI.

  7. Can anyone suggest a #linux alternative to #visio that is #foss and includes or can download #networking and #computer objects? ?

I'd like to work on a visual representation of my #homelab configuration. I have Visio for Windows but I'd like to work in my #ubuntu setup.

I found #librecad but I can't find any blocks or networking objects to download for it.

  8. LibreCAD, being a fork of QCAD 2.0.5 Community Edition, for a long time had only a Points-based Grid.

Now there are settings to fully customize the Grid look:
    1) with Points type its possible to set Metagrid to Continious line type (or other).
    2) with Lines type its possible to fully customize both, main Grid and Metagrid line types.

Also, its possible to customize the look of Axis Lines and extend them infinitely.

  9. New LibreCAD's splash & about dialog banner in the latest builds now are relevant to the version of the build: Alpha, Beta, Release Candidate & Release.

  10. LibreCAD latest CI builds now includes corresponding startup splash image according to version you are launching.

Also, old basic "About" dialog now replaced with a new one, which includes a splash image too (that is too large, really).

So, I proposed to use a half of a splash image as a banner image in a new "About" dialog, and diverse its look for ALPHA, BETA, RC and RELEASE releases: github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/i

  11. Latest LibreCAD `2.2.2_alpha` build now supports the inline calculation in "Cmd" ("Command") widget. Its available via the next command:

    `cal {formula}`

    OR

    `cal: {formula}`

(previously calculator mode was a separate sub-mode in "Command" widget)
